Texas securing Steve Sarkisian for another season certainly led the news cycle this weekend. It’s notable because Texas officially extended its two-time college football playoff coach. But what is more important to me is this: It shows that Sark definitely “wants” to be at Texas. Texas tight end Amari Niblack will enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, first reported by Matt Zenitz. Niblack saw 90 snaps of game time in 2024 for the Longhorns, about a quarter of what he saw at Alabama in 2023. The Alabama transfer recorded five catches for 33 yards. When the Longhorns moved to playing more 12 personnel, it was mainly Juan Davis who trotted onto the field. For most of the season, the Longhorns kept Niblack at bay. A quick update on the Texas scholarship count with the early enrollees now fully moved onto campus and the semester starting back up for the spring term. By my count, Texas sits with 78 scholarships on campus at the moment, with three waiting to arrive in the summer. I can confirm that Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has agreed to a contract extension with the Longhorns and is declining NFL interviews. First reported by Brett McMurphy. Couple of quick notes: 1. I’ve been told that the returning starter in question - the one we’ve been tracking - has decided to stay at Texas and did not enter the portal. So put that one to bed. 2. We’ve been tracking a returning starter entering the portal as of early this week. As of now, we believe there’s a greater than 50-50 chance that that player now remains at Texas. It’s coming down to the wire but that’s where it sits as of right now based on sources close to the player in question. ** While much of the focus has been on returning starters and “name” players for the Horns, the effort for Texas staff goes much deeper than that. A Texas special teams analyst will be moving on to a coordinator role according to a report by Football Scoop. Analyst Jeff Crosby has accepted the App State special teams coordinator position according to the report. Crosby had been a member of the Texas staff since 2021 when Texas hired Steve Sarkisian. Formerly, Crosby spent time with Southern Miss and Washington. The Longhorns will be experiencing all sorts of turnover in the special teams room next year. We are monitoring multiple Longhorn players who could enter the portal this week. This group includes existing starters and key back-ups. In fact, we believe at least one existing starter is likely to hit the portal. We will not release that name in case he ultimately decides to return. Just a quick update here. Colin Simmons, Ryan Wingo, Anthony Hill and Arch Manning have all been expected to return to Texas, and they indeed will. But we're now starting to hear about others who are definitively returning next season. With the announcement of Quinn Ewers heading to the NFL, the Arch Manning era at Texas has officially commenced. There are those who wonder if Manning can step in immediately next season and be as good as Ewers. I think he can. That’s not a knock on Ewers.
