While the country's top freshman currently resides in Austin, Texas, there is another player lighting it up in their first season of college football – one that Texas fans will be very familiar with after this week. The Texas Longhorns and Ohio State Buckeyes will play one another for the first time since meeting in the desert in January of 2009. While the two programs typically are not familiar with one another, the Longhorns are certainly familiar with the QB Will Howard. Shaw, who is 6-foot-5, 335 pounds, has played three seasons for the Tar Heels, logging 300+ snaps this season, his best campaign yet in Chapel Hill. The former five-star prospect will fill a key hole for Texas next year, and that’s playing over the nose of the ball, similar to fellow portal transfer Cole Brevard from Purdue. That's a big human added to the portal class! Texas lands former North Carolina DL Travis Shaw out of the transfer portal, first reported by Matt Zenitz. Shaw, who is 6-5, 335 pounds, played all 13 games for North Carolina this season and has seen over 600 snaps in the three years at Chapel Hill. The Longhorns returned to the practice field yesterday. Sark and staff are trying to treat this like a traditional game week in many ways, including practice. But there are some things that are different. The Horns will travel to Dallas on Wednesday, a full two days before the game, instead of just one. That pushes their practice schedule up two days. So yesterday’s practice (Saturday) was much more like a typical Monday practice. Five-star eyeing another visit to Texas The Texas Longhorns pursuit of 5-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson (Loganville, Ga./Grayson) continues. Atkinson, 6-2.25 and 210-pounds, spoke with Tashard Choice and members of the Texas defensive staff prior to the Peach Bowl Wednesday. Texas and Atkinson have communication almost daily at this point, and have since June. Atkinson has been on campus in Austin twice, the Georgia game being the last time, and is expected back on campus in January or early in the spring. North Carolina portal defensive lineman Travis Shaw is in Austin, Texas for a visit he put on his Instagram story Saturday morning. Shaw entered the portal on December 10 after a season where he appeared in 13 games for the Tar Heels and racked up 337 snaps on the defensive side of the ball. Shaw has seen time as mostly a reserve for the last three years in Chapel Hill. In 2024, he racked up 20 tackles and 15 run stops per PFF. Zachariah and Zion Branch, brothers who played wide receiver and safety for USC, respectively, are expected to visit Texas in the coming days. The Branches have already visited Georgia and Arizona State. They are expected to visit Miami and Texas before making a final decision.
