The Longhorns hosted Wright for the Junior Day on Jnauary 20th where it was clear the Longhorns were the top team in the recruitment. The efforts date back to last summer where it became clear Texas was going to be the top team in this recruitment during the Pool Bash in July. Off-season narratives are starting to creep into the conversation. Yesterday alone, two different national reporters/analysts - Andy Staples and David Pollack - chose Texas to win the 2025 national championship. And Arch Manning was projected to be a second-team All-American. While Texas is immensely talented, I find it hard to believe that the Horns are the likely favorite for a national championship in 2025. Barring an unforeseen change of the highest degree, the Texas Longhorns will enter the 2025 season with the same head coach, offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator for the fifth consecutive season. Quite the accomplishment considering the success of the program of the last two seasons and the job opportunities available to other assistants in Austin. Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is reporting that Texas RB coach Tashard Choice is expected to interview with the Dallas Cowboys soon. Choice is a former Cowboys player and has a long-standing relationship with owner Jerry Jones. Jones has even had Choice meet with the Cowboys’ rookie running backs in seasons prior. Choice makes $700,000 per year with the Longhorns. Most NFL RB assistants are paid in the $400k range. Choice almost certainly is due a raise with the Longhorns this off-season. I’ve spent the better part of the last week trying to delve deeper into the complex issues surrounding the proposed House Settlement, a class action settlement between former and current NCAA athletes and the NCAA and its member institutions which choose to opt in to the settlement. Now that the Senior Bowls have concluded, it is full steam ahead for the NFL Combine and the campus Pro Days. Texas once again has double digit players that are hopeful to hear their name announced in the upcoming NFL Draft and with the current count, I believe they will accomplish that feat. There was a lot of coaching news over the weekend. Let’s start with Tashard Choice, the Texas RB coach who was the object of Jerry Jones and the Cowboys’ attention. Clarence Hill, who is a friend who has covered the Cowboys for decades, reports that Choice is unlikely to take the Cowboys job because of significant differences in pay between the Cowboys and Longhorns. Texas has hired Josh Brunson away from Memphis, according to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports. Brunson was the director of recruiting at Memphis. Brunson is said to have strong ties to the state of Georgia. Brandon Harris is the general manager for Texas. He was elevated to that position from Director of Recruiting by Steve Sarkisian in January of 2024. Harris received a sizable raise and extension from Sarkisian just last month. Other key off-field personnel for the Horns include Chris Gilbert, special assistant to the head coach, John Michael Jones, director of player personnel, and Taylor Searels, director of recruiting.

BOOOOOOM! Early this morning, Ohio State defensive tackle Hero Kanu announced he would be transferring to Texas. Kanu, a 6-foot-5, 305-pound redshirt sophomore, is a key addition to the Longhorns for 2025. Kanu recorded four tackles in 100+ snaps in 2024 for the Buckeyes. While he is unlikely to start in Austin, he should be a integral piece of the DL rotation and provide much-needed depth. On Texas Football has learned that Ohio State transfer DT Hero Kanu is on his way to Georgia today for an official visit. Kanu visited the Longhorns over the weekend, which was followed immediately by an official visit to Florida yesterday. We are told Kanu is expected to make a decision about his future on Wednesday or Thursday of this week.
