Hook ‘Em! From College Station to Austin! Texas lands former Texas A&M freshman offensive tackle Jonte Newman out of the transfer portal. Newman, originally out of Bridgeland High in Cypress, Texas, makes the move from the Aggies to the Longhorns after just one year. Newman had committed to the Aggies pretty early in his recruitment after being pursued heavily by Texas and many others. Did USC play the recruiting game all wrong? In my view, they gambled (taking advantage of a lack of solid regulation post-House settlement) and paid high schoolers to stay committed, racking up a huge 35-man high school class and the #1 class in the country. They went for a first-mover advantage to load up on talented youngsters. But given how things have unfolded this portal cycle, it seems like they tried to get an advantage in the wrong direction, spending significant outlays on young unproven talent. Of course, this comes on the heels of freshman Nick Brooks entering the portal Tuesday afternoon. Brooks becomes the fifth Longhorn offensive lineman to enter the portal in the 2026 portal window, joining Daniel Cruz, Connor Stroh, Nate Kibble and Neto Umeozulu. I’ll start with mine. Offense: Ivan Williams, big strapping RB, but when I first started really liking him was when I heard a story about a hot shot recruit coming into town for a recruiting visit and started running his mouth. Ivan lined him out and told him to shut the f up, or he’d shut him up. Defense: Brian Robison, very good DE, but so athletic was used on FG defense because of his like 40” vertical. Blocked several in his career. And who can forget the hit on Rett Bomar, fumble and Rod Wright rumbling for about 70 yard TD in RRR.
