Texas should be a much better team in 2026 than 2025. We all believe that. But that expected improvement is not rare among the teams in the SEC hoping to win a conference championship. The 6-foot-6, 335-pound Gilmer (Texas) standout picked the Longhorns over SMU, Oregon, Texas A&M, LSU, Alabama and a host of other suitors. Texas inside top 10 in ESPN way-too-early Top 25 hoops rankings ESPN released an updated way-too-early top 25 ranking for the 2026-27 college basketball season. The Longhorns will appear anywhere from No. 7 to 12 in all the preseason rankings. After landing today’s commitment from Gilmer five-star OT Ismael Camara, Texas now has five offensive line commitments in the 2027 cycle. I believe it’s the best OL haul Texas has landed since the 2022 group, which set the foundation for the ascension of the program under Steve Sarkisian. That group was a huge class in terms of quantity with seven total signees, but also quality as the haul produced three NFL Draft Picks and two additional players who will have finished their careers with two years worth of starts in the Burnt Orange. Out of all positions in the 2027 Texas recruiting class, none has more question marks than linebacker. The good thing is Texas signed a great group in 2026 and feels like it hit on all three, which in turn will allow the Longhorns to be ok if they only end up with two, or possibly even one linebacker come Signing Day in December. The transfer portal can also help, but so does the following recruiting cycle. Not that I’m saying Texas is or will kick the can down the road, but you have to be smart with your budget and it makes zero sense to spend big money at the linebacker position in back-to-back cycles. Yesterday, Greedy James flipped his commitment from Texas to LSU. For those who have been following his recruitment here at OTF, the change should have come with little surprise. We’ve been saying for more than a week that we did not expect James to be part of the class. Why were we so certain? Couple of reasons: - James wanted a sizable NIL deal. Longhorns Out for a Quick 4th of July Intermission *** Consider this a halftime for summer conditioning. The team has been given a quick break from the grueling summer workouts led by Torre Becton over at DKR and Denius to celebrate the 4th of July. Texas loaded with NBA talent in 2026-27 The preseason polls will have the 2026-27 Texas Longhorns basketball team ranked anywhere from No. 7 to No. 12. The team was very well constructed by Sean Miller and staff with pieces that fit, and a number of those pieces will have futures in pro basketball. That could be in the NBA or overseas in high level leagues in the next few years. When looking at the 2026-27 team specifically, the Longhorns are showing up all over 2027 NBA mock drafts following the conclusion of the 2026 draft. At 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Sherrard chose the Longhorns over LSU and Oklahoma amongst over two dozen other offers. OnTexasFootball caught up with Pearland Shadow Creek Head Coach Tyrone Green to talk about Texas’ latest commit Brandon Sherrard. Few coaches have coached or seen more talent than Green and he’s also been to the State Title game three times and has one State Championship ring. Originally from Mississippi, Green played offensive line at the University of Houston before getting into coaching in 2003. He spent five years as an assistant at Houston Lamar from 2003-07. He then coached at Manvel in the 2008 season before returning to Houston Lamar for seven more seasons between 2009-15.
