Failing forward. The Penn State AD, who was surreptitiously recorded during a meeting with players spouting all sorts of nonsense and juvenile double talk, literally fell into a great situation. The Nittany Lions hired Matt Campbell away from Iowa State yesterday. But the very idea that the AD had a dozen other candidates on his wish list ahead of Campbell in the first place tells me all I need to know. Sometimes schools get lucky. I think Penn State did just that with their new head coach. Maybe not so much with their AD. ** Iowa State moved quickly to hire Washington State’s Jimmy Rodgers as its new coach. That leaves the Cougars with an op…

Derrek Cooper on new RB coach Jabbar Juluke OnTexasFootball spoke with Texas 5-star running back signee Derrek Cooper (Hollywood, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna) within the last few minutes. The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder knows Jabbar Juluke from the recruiting process, with Jaluke working hard to recruit Cooper for the Florida Gators for well over a year. “Great coach," Cooper told OTF. "Great dude. Other coaches speak highly of him too.” Cooper and his mom are expected to have a phone conversation with Juluke at some point this weekend, but the two have already exchanged text messages. "I spoke with him via text. He said he was going to get on the phone wi…

Which SEC Team has the Toughest 5 Week Span *** The SEC released the dates for the 2026 conference schedule. The conference is moving to a nine game slate with only one bye week in 2026, meaning the already very difficult gauntlet is getting ever more difficult. While Texas knows its fate, I wanted to go down the list of the other SEC schools and see which teams will be feeling the heat as conference play gets rollings. *** Alabama W6: Georgia W7: @ Tennessee W8: Texas A&M W9 – Idle W10 – @ LSU Vanderbilt also follows up the trip to Death Valley, but ultimately a very difficult five week span for the…

We're talking about portal! Not a game! Not a game! We're talking about portal! Let's talk about portal to start Thursday morning. OTF takes a look at what positions of need there are. Quarterback Expected to return: Arch Manning and KJ Lacey. Incoming: Dia Bell Gone portaling: Trey Owens OTF: An experienced QB as a third teamer is something we are watching. KJ Lacey will be a solid No. 2. A redshirt is preferred and expected for Dia Bell. Doubtful Sark wants to be in a similar position as Missouri this season if the unthinkable happens. Running back Expected/possibility to return: James Simon, Christian Clark, Tre Wisner Incoming: Derre…

Texas EDGE Lance Jackson Honored on SEC All-Freshman Team *** Texas edge rusher Lance Jackson capped a breakout freshman campaign by becoming the second Longhorn named to the SEC All-Freshman Team, joining Colin Simmons last season. Jackson appeared in all 12 games and quickly established himself as one of Texas’ most reliable young disruptors, finishing with 15 tackles, 2.0 sacks, and four quarterback pressures. Jackson made an impression right away, starting the season with two tackles and a quarterback hurry in the home opener against San Jose State. He followed that up by recording his first collegiate sack against Sam Houston. Then, as Texas moved…

Additional Bowl Practices Benefitting Longhorns *** As part of being a program of honor and opting into playing a bowl game this December, the Texas Longhorns receive a valuable 15 additional bowl practices and full live game against another power four opponent. That time on the practice field, and additional game will go a long way for players on the developmental track. *** Freshman DB Jonah Williams This is a no-brainer. Williams is set to participate on the diamond this spring once again for the Longhorns and Jim Schlossnagle. With that said, the spring football development will be halted as he works to contribute for the reigning SEC reg…

A college football bomb exploded yesterday, its epicenter Ann Arbor, Mich. Exactly one week after national signing day and three weeks before Michigan is set to take on Texas in the Citrus Bowl, the Wolverines fired head coach Sherrone Moore for cause. Moore apparently went apoplectic following his dismissal and was detained in a local jail, according to published reports. It’s both a sad and ugly situation that has unfolded. But what does it mean for Texas, for the Citrus Bowl match-up, for bowl opt-outs from Michigan, the portal, the recruiting class, etc.? There are a lot of things left to be determined. But one is pretty clear: Michigan w…

Most Intriguing Portal Names to Enter as of Dec. 10. *** Wanted to compile some interesting names that have announced intentions to the portal so far. This does not guarantee Texas will be after any of these prospects, but for now these names are what stands out the most among the early portal entrants. Also, keep in mind: There will be many, many more big fish to enter the portal over the next three weeks. Based off the portal entrants now, this is like playing a round of golf and digging the ball out of the cup on the 2nd hole. That's where we are at currently. But anyways, to the list. *** Clemson Junior DB Khalil Barnes 2…

With the departure of Chad Scott yesterday, the Horns are now in need of an RB coach. One name to watch for: Jabbar Juluke, formerly of Florida. Another with less certain availability is Frank Wilson of LSU. Texas is looking for a coach with strong ties to New Orleans and/or another major metro area in the South (think Atlanta, Miami, Orlando or New Orleans). However, timing is something to consider. For those wanting or expecting a quick turnaround, keep in mind that that is not typically the style of Steve Sarkisian. He likes to make deliberate decisions, not rushed ones, when it comes to assistant coaches. ** While almost everyone is conce…

Tuesday Recruiting Notes OnTexasFootball compiled some notes in the last 24 hours to start you guys and gals Tuesday morning. Karnell "Greedy" James OTF stopped by Manvel High Monday for athletic period. I have known Manvel High for well over a decade in this business, and have been to Manvel High many times with the Mavericks having a lot of DI prospects come through the school since opening. Manvel High head coach Kirk Martin is a big fan of the recognition and eyes at safety Karnell James displays. Manvel High will also play him at corner next season, as well as safety. James recently turned 17, but he's a young 17 physically. He's not even cl…

Recruiting: 2027 prospects to know The Texas staff will be continuing to evaluate 2027 prospects the remainder of December before hitting the road to see prospects in person in January ahead of Junior Day. That means a number of new offers will be made in the next two months. While there are plenty of decisions to be made in terms of an early pecking order for Texas in 2027, there are a number of prospects OTF knows are and will likely continue to be priorities throughout the 2027 cycle. OTF provides a rundown of some key 2027's to know. Running back ... Noah Roberts, Chandler (Az.) Basha 6-0, 190 Industry ranking: 4-star Texas offer: May 5, …

Texas linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. is off to the NFL! The three year starter announced his decision to enter his name in the NFL Draft for 2026, foregoing his senior season. One of the best individual defensive players we have seen over the last decade, Hill will be on an early round draft pick in next spring's NFL Draft and will be a fine representative of The University of Texas in the league. There’s only one SEC team the Longhorns would be underdogs against on a neutral field - Georgia. Not Alabama. They can’t run the ball and their QB is seriously overrated. Certainly not Oklahoma, Texas A&M or Vanderbilt. Texas already beat them all convincingly. Not Ole Miss either. They lost their coach. That’s the problem with this “committee”. It talks about the Longhorns’ loss to Florida as if Texas is the same team today that played in Gainesville at the first of October. The Longhorns clearly aren’t. Texas is 6-1 over the last seven games, including three top 10 wins. Texas itself should be among the top 10 teams in the country. The …

Hopefully Notre Dame getting left out of the playoffs forces changes to the college football playoff. But given Notre Dame’s apparent automatic-in if they’re in the top 12 next year, the impetus won’t come from the Irish. Instead, it’s going to have to emanate from the commissioners of the SEC and Big 10. They hold the keys. The commissioners have at least an extra month to re-work the CFP for next year. I hope they get it to at least 16 teams, if not 24. ** The value placed on bowls is obviously diminishing. Sure, it’s a good opportunity for teams and players to further hone their craft through 15 practices and a game. But some programs…

Texas RB CJ Baxter is set to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal when it opens January 2nd. ESPN's Pete Thamel was the first to break the news that the Texas running back will opt out of the bowl game and enter the portal when it opens on January 2nd. I can add this had been a growing possibility since the Kentucky game in Moncrief. In SEC play, Baxter attempted 30 rushing attempts for just 85 yards. While Texas will await a decision from Tre Wisner as well, the plan all along was to be active in the portal for a contributing running back. View full news story
