Brent Venables is keeping the availability of Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer for Saturday’s Red River Shootout under wraps. When asked on Wednesday’s SEC coaches teleconference about how the No. 6 Sooners planned to list Mateer’s status on the conference’s official injury report, Venables indicated he won’t release anything other than what the league requires coaches to divulge. “That’ll come out tonight and everybody will get it at the same time,” Venables said. Whether it’s Mateer or Michael Hawkins Jr. behind center at the Cotton Bowl, the Texas defense should hit the field hellbent on proving its run-stopping capabilities are greater than how the Long…

And it could explain why we look less physical than we do. It seems his philosophical change and approach to practice may be the reason we look the way we do physically and most likely mentally. CFB ain’t the NFL brother you don’t have 17 games and make it as a wild card with a 10-7 record(this would be like 9-4 in college). Also the mentality and maturity of a CFB isn’t that of a pro player From a March interview: As a result, the Longhorns will have fewer contact periods and more teach periods with more controlled scrimmages instead of going for 140 plays. “Just a little bit of a shift philosophically, as I touched on even back in Decem…

Wanted to add to the conversation from yesterday in regards to making life easier on the offensive side of the ball... Arch Manning currently has the smallest % of pass attempts targeting pass catchers in between yards 1–9 among Power 4 quarterbacks. There are 73 quarterbacks that qualify according to PFF. Only 25.7% of Manning's pass attempts are in the short yardage category – again, that is yards 1–9 downfield.

I see so much anger and negativity on the boards since Saturdays loss. Losses suck, especially when you get out physicalled across the board. They are having a crisis of identity and confidence from the top down. We can chose to either support the team and help them push past this towards success, or we can run around bashing the team and calling for coaches jobs. Don't forget that this is the same coaching staff that took us to 2 playoff semi's in a row. Two 12+ win seasons in a row and have brought us back to relevance on the field instead of just relevance off the field. Just like a friend or a loved one, you will give them the hard truth, but you still su…

To what extent Texas can pull the nose up and salvage the 2025 season, which is trending in the wrong direction after last Saturday’s 29-21 road loss to Florida, will depend on what the Longhorns do against No. 6 Oklahoma in the Red River Shootout at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday (2:30 p.m., ABC). A win over the Sooners would position Steve Sarkisian’s squad for a strong finish to the October portion of the schedule, played entirely away from Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. A loss would be the second in conference play for Texas (3-2, 0-1 SEC) and, with three opponents currently ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 left on the schedule other than Oklahoma (5-0, 1-0), it…

I keep hearing everyone say we have a young team. We have some new players stepping into starting roles but are we really that young if many of our players starting on offense and defense are in year 3?

Alright obviously something needs to change and needs to change fast. I don’t know what the solution will be and how good of a solution we will see come Saturday but there has to be something positive coming out of it. I mean even if the running backs as a whole manage to get 60 plus yards Saturday, which is still pretty pitiful, it will be an improvement that needs to happen. I don’t know if they change personnel or if that’s even the problem with the line. They just look like they don’t give a rats ass to be physical. I don’t know if this game was a fluke because there has been some signs of life in our line, but if memory serves correct I remember Cole Hutson and DJ Ca…

As Saturday’s 29-21 loss to Florida unfolded, it became clear that Texas has significant issues. Some of those issues can be fixed over the seven remaining games on the regular-season schedule, but others will require changes after the season. Still, Saturday’s loss to the Gators came down to the Longhorns losing the line of scrimmage battle in a landslide. From the jump, Florida (2-3, 1-2 SEC) punched Texas (3-2, 0-1) in the mouth up front and never let up. The Gators finished the game with six sacks and seven tackles for loss. While the Longhorn offensive line might not be solely responsible for each of those negative plays, the fact that the Texas runnin…

Since it is pointless to point out that we should have gotten OL in the portal, to fire Flood, hire Pittman, etc, I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on who we have and what the ceiling can be. We've seen the floor and it's ugly. I know a big question is physicality, though part of this is mental and part of this is in-born to the players that we recruited. What has been more concerning to me is that the current OL's inability to play assignment sound football, which allows these simulated fronts with 4 down linemen to get home easily with zero resistance. In no particular order: 1) Goosby isn't the plug and play guy we thought at LT. Does he still have the same…

This was probably the most difficult game to choose three players to recognize that Texas has played this season. In actuality, I don't think three players were entirely deserving, but for the sake of the list, this is where we land Star No. 1: TyAnthony Smith Smith is on his way to becoming one of the best linebackers Texas has had in quite some time. Of course, playing alongside Anthony Hill Jr. has allowed Smith to play freely. You see the instincts clearly on the huge forced fumble in the 2nd quarter as well. Smith also added 1.5 tackles for loss and remains one of the better gap shooters Texas has. Star No. 2: Anthony Hill Jr. …
