We are one day away from the beginning of fall camp. As many are excited and talking about the ceiling for what is expected to be another special season for Texas Football, I want to play a cautionary tale of what remains unanswered as football returns to The 40 Acres. This is not meant to be a negative post, more a realistic approach to the roster. My intent is to field some conversations in regard to the future of the team and whether or not you all see solutions or if you are not worried about the talking points I bring to light here. Happy Monday. The 2024 College Football season inches closer Wednesday when the Longhorns return to the field for the first practice of fall camp. However, before we begin writing the story of the 2024 season, it is time for one last visit through the chapter of 2023 everyone would rather skip – the red zone. We'll use this thread to track all portal news that pertains to Texas baseball. I'll start with the news I broke yesterday: Texas landed a commitment from Penn pitcher Eli Trop. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound RHP has one year of eligibility remaining. Trop has a 3.07 career ERA, along with 82 strikeouts during those three years. I know some outlets reported this happened a couple of weeks ago, but Trop originally committed in the fall, as Ivy Leagues don’t allow a fifth year. So he entered his name into the portal in October. We've sat on it until he was okay with us going public with it after the coaching change.

OTF checked in with 2025 four-star defensive back Aidan Anding out of Ruston, Louisiana late Sunday evening. Anding was originally set to make a commitment at the flip of the calendar from June to July, however decided to hold off and reroute after receiving an offer from LSU. Anding visited LSU late last week and made an additional trip to Fayetteville on Saturday to meet with Arkansas. Where things sit currently are pretty quiet. Anding has no timeline to make a decision, nor does Anding have any college games or additional visits locked in for the season at the moment. With less than 25 days before the NCAA quiet period begins for baseball, the Texas coaches have been out on the road relentlessly recruiting. *** As you all know, five-star defender Jonah Williams was on campus today for football. Certain media outlets have reported that he met with Schlossnagle, but that’s impossible, as the Texas baseball staff is out recruiting. They did Facetime while he was on campus, however. The Texas baseball staff views Jonah as an athletic “freak” and he’s definitely a take for the Horns baseball program if Sark lands him. Obviously the MLB Draft will be a HUGE factor …

Panicking over recruiting? “Don’t worry, we’ve got it handled. Just keep the faith.” That’s seemingly what Steve Sarkisian was reminding us all of yesterday following the flip of Folsom, Calif., defensive tackle Josiah Sharma from Oregon to Texas. Sark, in typical Sark style, scoffed at the idea of recruiting being all about early commitments and landed one of his very top defensive tackles in the country. A few notes from late summer offseason workouts ahead of fall camp beginning next week. *** – I was able to get a look at Alfred Collins walking into the facility on Thursday afternoon. The recent Texas roster update has Collins listed at 320 pounds and let me tell you, even after being listed at 315 a year ago, his body looks significantly different. Collins looks wider than he ever has at Texas. I spoke with a high-ranking official at the University of Texas this morning. One of the expected outcomes of the scholarship roster expansions will be the creation of more women’s sports teams at Texas. If the numbers divulged by the Yahoo! report are accurate, and the source I spoke with says they are, it creates roughly 60+ new men’s scholarship opportunities compared to just roughly 20 on the women’s side. That disparity will put Texas, and others, at odds with federal Title IX legislation that requires scholarship opportunities to be equal on both sides. If you missed the news yesterday, the NCAA appears set to create new scholarship limits for most major sports. Football is expected to move from 85 to 105 scholarships. Baseball will move up to 34. Men’s basketball looks like it will add two spots. Women’s softball gains 13 new spots and volleyball adds 6. So what does all this mean?
