Big week for Texas recruiting To say this is a big week for Texas football recruiting, and a big close to the month would be an understatement. Steve Sarkisian and staff are now in a position for some key recruitments to fall their way with the flip of Kade Phillips and Michael Fasusi have been trending away. With five decisions for sure by the end of August, the Longhorns have to win two. And in reality, winning three is what is needed for the class headed into the season. A quick note from Saturday's scrimmage. C Jake Majors was not a participant in the scrimmage this morning due to an ankle sprain. I was told Majors has not been active for much of the week leading up to the scrimmage and the staff opted to keep him sidelined for this morning's action. As a result, it was Hayden Conner who was bumped inside to the center position and Cole Hutson who took over the left guard duties. Let’s start with some really good news. I am told that Texas has been very happy with the work of Jerrick Gibson at running back. Very happy. He has stepped up and is being more and more reliable in each practice and is working to understand pass protection at the college level more and more. At this stage, we expect Gibson to have a role on this team out of the gate. Now don’t get carried away. I’m not talking about starting or being the premier back. Going into camp, we were wondering about several position battles: - The Wide receiver rotation - Possible OL rotation - Edge - Cornerback opposite Manny Muhammad ** Prior to the second and final scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday, most of these battles look like they’ve almost all been settled, except perhaps one: Wide receiver rotation Silas Bolden and DeAndre Moore seem to have solidified roles on this team. Texas 2023 class: It's a hit The Texas Longhorns signed the No. 3 ranked class in the 2023 cycle headlined by Arch Manning and a trio of five-star prospects. Now entering season two in the program, the class is looking like it will deliver in a big way for Steve Sarkisian and staff. There could be as many as 12 members of the 25 man class that are in the two-deep when the first ball is kicked vs. Colorado State August 31. That includes as many as five starting. Jahdae Barron and Quinn Ewers met with the media following practice last night. CJ will have a full report later this morning. But I picked up on one thing from each player that I wanted to mention this morning. Jahdae Barron compared playing the star position to playing the kid's game of Red Light, Green Light. He was, of course, talking about how you see run vs pass and his corresponding responsibilities on the play. It was an easy analogy to understand just how clearly Barron's mind for the game works. Our Bobby Burton did a great job of adding some light to the running back room earlier this morning here on OTF. As it did for Bobby, Steve Sarkisian's comments caught my attention in regards to additional reshuffling of some bodies to the running back room prior to the start of the season. Freshman running back Christian Clark landed awkwardly in yesterday afternoon's practice while coming down with a pass. According to sources, we are told that the injury is expected to be season-ending. Clark was unable to make it off the field by himself following the non-contact injury. ** If that's the case, Texas is now down to just three scholarship running backs for the 2024 football season after just the first two weeks in fall camp. ** So where do the Horns go from here? Following Saturday's scrimmage, the Texas coaching staff met amongst themselves on Sunday. As Steve Sarkisian described it, it's the beginning of the winnowing process. From a personnel standpoint, this first scrimmage was about seeing which players already belonged and can be relied on, which players were knocking on the door of reliability, and which ones will likely need another full season of development.
