Texas hoops: Scrimmage vs. SMU Sean Miller's first season at Texas begins in 20 days in Charlotte, N.C. vs. the Duke Blue Devils. This weekend, Miller and staff will get a good feel for where they are at with the SMU Mustangs headed to Austin for a closed door scrimmage. Per dumb NCAA rules, the scrimmage results are not made public (wink, wink). The Longhorns in year one under Miller are considered a fringe top 25 team by some, and top 35-40 team by others. The first injury availability report has been released. Texas will be without starting center Cole Hutson when on the road this weekend in Lexington. Hutson sustained an injury in practice and very quickly was given the inactive designation. The expectation is Connor Robertson will start at center for the Horns this weekend. Connor Stroh also appears on the injury report on the offensive line. As does Xavier Filsaime in the back end of the defense. View full news story

It goes without saying, but the trip to Dallas was big. Texas continues to dominate its biggest rival on the field with its third win in four seasons – all of which preventing Oklahoma from reaching the end zone. But larger than that, the Longhorns keep their season alive with the victory in Dallas. Just as the offensive line seemed to gel against Oklahoma, starting center Cole Hutson has now been labeled as “out” for the Kentucky game by Coach Steve Sarkisian. The exact injury has not been revealed but Hutson sustained it during Tuesday’s practice. It is not expected to be season-ending, but he “will miss some time”. ** Back-up Connor Robertson is expected to take over for Hutson at center with Nick Brooks remaining at left guard. Depth at EDGE Starting to Show Walking into Dallas on Saturday, the Texas edge room and defense as a whole had a combined zero sacks against the two Power Four teams Texas had lined up opposite of so far in 2025. That changed pretty quickly against Oklahoma on Saturday in the Cotton Bowl. Texas not only walked out of the Cotton Bowl with the Golden Hat, but with 5.0 sacks under their belts and a revival of expectations with the threat of the pass rush. Six games in, we have now reached the midway point in the season. And some Texas players who have not seen much action (playing in four games or less) are making and/or contemplating decisions about redshirting and then possibly transferring. Yesterday, we heard of one such player who is opting to take the redshirt with the intent of entering the portal in December. He will not play the rest of the season. While we are not going to name the player until he or the team announces it, I can say the player is not a front-line player and really does not have a clear path to the field or to be a large contributor long-term at Texas. What I mentioned in this column yesterday morning became public by yesterday afternoon. Sophomore running back Jerrick Gibson has left the program. Gibson’s role never quite took off at Texas. While some will point to his tendency to fumble, I think it’s actually more definitive than that. Gibson just wasn’t as good as Tre Wisner and is not appreciatively more talented than Christian Clark or James Simon. So when you add his propensity to fumble on top of it, Gibson just had no real advantage other than his size over the other runners. Size just isn’t enough to ever be a front-line guy at Texas. Approaching the Offensive Line Over the Next Few Weeks Texas ran the football 36 times for roughly 4-yards per clip against Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon. In total, 136 yards were racked up in the win over what is still the nation's No. 10 ranked rushing defense. It was a sight for sore eyes, especially after the circus show that traveled to The Swamp where only 15 rushing yards were accumulated by running backs. The top 2028 QB on the board? I stopped by Vero Beach High in September to see 2028 quarterback Wonderful "Champ" Monds IV. The 6-foot-2, 223-pound sophomore put together a tremendous freshman season for Vero Beach High before sustaining a high-ankle sprain in the season opener in 2025.
