Texas received good news yesterday when Ethan Mendoza made the decision to return to school. Longhorns assistant coach Troy Tulowitzki met with Mendoza and his family yesterday at their home in Bedford and the two parties agreed it would be best for him to finish his final year of college baseball in Austin. Unfortunately for Mendoza, he will require shoulder surgery, which is set to take place this week. As far as a timetable for a return goes, that is currently up in the air. Last season Mendoza went .278 at the plate with 52 runs, 14 doubles, 10 home runs, 50 RBI and 11 stolen bases. -- If Mendoza isn't ready by the time practice rolls around, …

Before we get to football and the first day of fall camp, I want to mention the men’s basketball team. Yesterday, Sean Miller hosted members of the media for a basketball practice. The practice and the notes coming from it were on “background” only, so you won’t see or hear specific notes from it on here or elsewhere. But I want to say one thing: it felt very much like something a big-time basketball program, like Arizona, Kansas or Kentucky, would do. The text of the proposed Protect College Sports Act was finally shared in full with reporters. Among the rules, the “Lane Kiffin rule”was perhaps the most eye-popping. A college head coach can not take another job during his own season UNLESS he sits out an entire year of active duty. BOOM! Texas has landed another commitment, this time from Richmond Randle running back Landen Williams-Callis. At 5-foot-7.5, 190 pounds, Williams-Callis chose the Longhorns over Texas A&M, SMU, Houston, and Missouri. The Richmond Randle product is the consensus No. 3 running back in the nation and is ranked as a top 50 overall prospect. According to a "clarification" penned by the Judge Charlotte Sweeney, who granted the class of 2022 a five-for-five years opportunity, the injunction she wrote on Friday does not alter "the House Settlement, roster caps, and transfer rules". So what does that mean? Yes, class of 2022 players will be granted an additional year of eligibility if they seek one. However, they will not be able to transfer to another school to play this season unless they had already entered their name in the NCAA transfer portal in January.
