College Football Playoff: No. 16 Texas now needs four teams to lose to get in No. 16 Texas kept their slim College Football Playoff hopes alive with the 27-17 win over No. 3 Texas A&M. While there can be an argument made Texas should/could be in with three top 10 wins and a very difficult road schedule, that's not the reality right now of what Tuesday's College Football Playoff ranking is saying. And that's all that matters headed into Saturday. I'll start with this ... I believe Texas will end up jumping ahead of No. 12 Utah (the Utes should drop 2-3 spots off last two weeks alone, plus their schedule). If not, that's egregious. But let's start…

College Football Playoff: Seven SEC teams technically still in the playoff race The first ever 12 team college football playoff is about to get very interesting in the SEC with Ole Miss beating Georgia Saturday. It's going to take 10-2 from the SEC and Big 10 to get in with the month of November leading to survive and advance, and then it may still not be enough in the SEC. OTF loves your chances! These two teams in the Big 10 conference are in barring a collapse. Oregon (10-0) - at Wisconsin and vs. Washington Indiana (10-0) - at Ohio State and vs. Purdue Margin of error down to one more loss for two Big 10 teams Ohio State (8-1)…

College Football Playoff: Texas is now a lock to host a playoff game The first ever 12 team college football playoff has gone from many chaotic scenarios three weeks ago to a handful of scenarios beginning championship week. I believe there are eight teams that are virtual locks for the CFP, with four spots to be determined this weekend in conference championship games. If you are a Texas fan, the win over hated rival Texas A&M guarantees the Longhorns will host a first round playoff game - at worst. You are in, and you will host or have a bye... Oregon (12-0) - win the Big Ten Championship game and it's a bye. Lose, and the Ducks will host …

College Football Playoff: Where it stands The first even 12 team college football playoff is beginning to truly take shape. Four and five games into conference play around the country, the cream is rising to the top. And with that, means it's easy to see which teams have the least margin for error to get in. It's going to take 10-2 from the SEC and Big 10 to get in with the month of November leading to survive and advance, and elimination games. OTF likes your chances! These teams in Power 4 conferences can lose one game and still get in: Oregon (8-0) - at Michigan, vs. Maryland, at Wisconsin and vs. Washington remain. Penn State (7-0) - v…

In a complete shocker, Boise State kicked the ball around the field and lost 31-7 at South Florida after the best player that ever wore the uniform graduated. And Dylan Raiola still drops the ball at, or slightly below his waist, on every throw. oof ---- Tonight we have Auburn at Baylor ... a quality game with plenty of possible implications for Hugh Freeze if the Tigers don't look improved. And Georgia Tech at Colorado. The Yellowjackets will grind one out in Boulder IMO View full news story

I try not to be reactionary. I really do. Since starting On Texas Football, I have attempted to approach covering the team with a level-headedness that speaks to my long experience in this business. I try to be the voice of reason when so many sites are focused on click bait headlines or pointless b.s. debates. But something happened yesterday that Steve Sarkisian appropriately called out in his post-game press conference and I want to address it. The Athletic article, which reported Steve Sarkisian is putting his name out there to NFL teams, spread like wildfire across the internet and onto television airwaves. We posted it on our message board a…

OTF can confirm the initial report by 247Sports National that Toledo linebacker Markus Boswell has signed with Texas. Boswell was a true freshman for Toledo last season. He registered 19 tackles. He played his high school ball at Lake Travis. Boswell’s father is a former UT and Olympic High Jumper. That makes 16 commitments for the Horns in this portal cycle and the third linebacker, joining Rasheem Biles and Justin Cryer. View full news story

Sarkisian: I Hear Derek Williams Jr. Now *** The biggest concern on the Texas football team in my eyes is the safety spot next to Jelani McDonald. It is not left guard on the offensive line, but instead the final line of defense in the secondary. Texas has a solidified stud with McDonald, but the spot next to him remains an unknown. For now, at least. When camp opened, senior Derek Williams Jr. got the nod with the first-team defense. Five practices in, that remains the case. So, moving forward, I have two questions: Can Williams hold onto the job, and who else does Texas feel comfortable with in the back end of its safety room? I asked Stev…

How the Texas 2027 Class Stacks Up With Previous Classes *** The month has turned to May which means it is full steam ahead towards the summer official visits. Steve Sarkisian's staff is out on the road checking out spring evaluations and future prospects. As final judgements are made, I wanted to provide a look at where the Longhorn class sits in comparison to previous years. Also, a quick look at other classes from notable programs across the country. *** 2027 Class vs. Previous Years From when the first week of May. 2027 Class 10 commits One 5-star – WR Easton Royal National Rank: 14th 2026 Class …

It has become a trend each year to wonder around this time of the year, when the Texas class will begin to heat up. Recruiting is fun, but there are spurts throughout the year where it certainly feels like you are crawling through a school zone in terms of excitement and momentum. The Texas staff is no stranger to that over the last four cycles as well. The monotonous day to day of the winter and spring seasons leads to some fireworks at the turn of July seemingly every year. It has become the blueprint for recruiting classes that have ended in the top five in each of the previous four cycles. As the official visit circus of June inches closer, I wanted to…

By The Numbers – RB Run Game in the SEC *** I have tested the Texas run game to improve and this weekend's matchup with Sam Houston State should provide an opportunity for the Longhorns to take steps in the right direction via the ground game. It was a frustrating afternoon in Austin on Saturday vs. UTEP, but there were some glimmers of hope. Freshman RB James Simon looked impressive. Jerrick Gibson held onto the rock and ran hard. Christian Clark got loose in space early on. There were positives. We know the run game with Arch Manning will be a factor once SEC play comes around. It quite simply is too efficient to not be a piece of the puzzle. Th…

Torre Becton's Conditioning Program Continues to Push Competition *** Each and every offseason you hear about a change in the throughout the course of the months waiting for football to occur. A common theme that maybe isn't exactly new, but certainly emphasized more in 2026 is the desire for the competitive spirit to drive workouts in the summer. The Longhorns had a day in the sand pit on the backfields at the Denius practice fields prior to the 4th of July break that was focused solely on competition and team building. That competitive spirit returned earlier in the week with a scavenger hunt during a conditioning workout. There were 12 groups, head…

How does Texas go about completing the 2025 class? Already the Longhorns have 21 commits in the current cycle and there remains plenty of spots remaining for what could be a top three class this cycle. An evaluation of what remains for the Texas staff: *** Quarterback KJ Lacey – Saraland (Ala.) High The Longhorns are happy with the commitment of KJ Lacey out of Saraland. Auburn has tried and tried to get in between the two sides but there is very little right now that keeps me from seeing Lacey ending up in Austin. Running Back Rickey Stewart – Tyler (Texas) Chapel Hill James Simon – Shreveport (Louisiana) Calvary Baptist Acad…

Confidence Rankings of Texas Position Rooms *** One week of spring practice is in the books for the Horns during the 2026 spring. While we will continue to learn about this team as the spring picks back up, we have a solid understanding of what the team is working with at the moment. A quick rankings of the positional rooms by confidence after one week. *** 1. Quarterback It is always a great feeling when quarterback is the top of the list in these types of rankings. Arch Manning will be limited in the spring, but we all know the type of talent the Horns will be working with come the fall. Not to mention, this is a fantastic opportunity for K…

of two former Longhorns football players, Cedric Griffin and James Lott. Lott and Griffin, both cornerbacks for the Longhorns who also played in the NFL, had sons who claimed gold yesterday at the Class 4A state track meet. Jalen Lott, a sophomore wide receiver and defensive back at Panther Creek in Frisco, won the long jump with a leap of 22-9.5. He also placed fifth in the high jump. His father once held the national high school record in the high jump at 7-4.75. Swayde Griffin, a junior at Lago Vista, won the state 110 hurdles. Again, his father Cedric, competed at an elite level in hurdles in high school, too. Congrats to the former Longhorns and t…

This has been a fun conversation on Longhorn Livestreams and The Winning Drive over this week and I have to tip my cap to @Rod Babersfor bringing this tweet/fact to my attention. In all honesty, I probably would have shut this tweet out completely from my brain for the sake of how the season wrapped up in Dallas. But it does bring a really solid conversation to the forefront. Here it is from Jim Nagy: Pretty remarkable run right? But it also entirely makes sense – the most talented, veteran group, wins the championship. Sounds pretty simple on the surface I have to admit. Which leads me to Texas and how the Longhorns can factor into this conversat…
