Initial Pregame Takeaway It is a bit breezy here in Ann Arbor. I don’t suspect it to be too much of an issue, but you never know when a strong gust will pick up and impact a ball in the air. Leaving for Michigan Stadium this morning, it was very cold. At kickoff today, it is as good of football weather as you will see, right around 60º. I’m hearing the Longhorns will likely be getting some good recruiting news this week. I can’t 100-percent promise it’s going to happen - the minds and timing of young people often change - but we’re prepping for it. ** Texas currently sits at 22 commitments for the class of 2025. The reclassification of Georgia safety Zelus Hicks brought the Horns to 22. Following his reclassification, Hicks has visited a couple of different places the last two weekends. The first piece of hardware has arrived for the 2024 Texas Longhorns! LT Kelvin Banks has won the 2024 Lombardi Award - awarded annually to the best lineman in the country. The legacy of Kelvin Banks is cemented. A 3-year starter will hopefully return for the College Football Playoff and then be off to the NFL Draft where he will be taken in the 1st round. Texas. Ohio State. Two of the final four teams in all of the country and two of the most illustrious programs in college football history. Also, the two programs in which Quinn Ewers has suited up for in his college career. The five-star prospect out of Southlake Carroll signed with Ohio State after opting out of his senior season and then transferred to Texas roughly six months after arriving in Columbus. This week it’s been back and forth some with Bert Auburn and Will Stone. The two kickers have been vying for the starting spot against Ohio State. Auburn, yesterday, seemed to get the upper hand. He made all the kicks with the 1s and 2s. We expect him to be the starter over Stone in the Cotton Bowl. Auburn beat out Stone twice before for the job. It looks like he’s done it once again, even though he’s been just 6 of 14 this season beyond 40 yards. I’m not shocked by this development. Hopefully, Auburn has worked on or tweaked his approach and possibly that of his holder as well. Auburn, at his best, is the better field goal kicker of the two. But …

Texas coaches are actually on the road in the Metroplex today visiting high schools. However, it’s not the coaches you would typically think. Gerry Hamilton ran into player personnel director John Michael Jones and director of high school relations Jamal Fenner at North Crowley right as Gerry was leaving earlier today. The Horns’ normal coaching staff is focused on the game this Friday, while the support staff and personnel department are on the road recruiting.

Wednesday AM recruiting nuggets Lewisville (Texas) High 5-star left tackle Michael Fasusi was on campus Tuesday for more of the day. He was accompanied on the trip by his father. Fasusi took in most of the Texas practice and met with Kyle Flood and Steve Sarkisian for an extended amount of time. As important as the meetings were with Flood and Sarkisian for Fasusi and his father, it was the business school that took center stage. Yesterday we were reminded of just how tenuous a relationship is between a player and his own future. It's a relationship that hangs in the balance with each and every decision an 18-to-22-year old player makes. The situation involving S'Maje Burrell, the redshirt freshman linebacker from North Crowley, is case and point. Burrell allegedly was the driver of the car that rear-ended T'Vondre Sweat. The accident flipped Sweat's car, Sweat himself was arrested for DUI, while Burrell fled the scene. News of Burrell's involvement was first reported yesterday. Some practice notes from yesterday... This is not a loaded practice report. But here are few things: - DJ Campbell was back in action. So the shoulder issue that occurred on Saturday, at least for now, seems to have been not much to worry about it. Fingers crossed we don't hear much about it and it was just a bruised shoulder or soreness. - The practice itself was described as lighter yet quicker than usual. As expected, the practice before a scrimmage is almost always a little less intense from a physicality standpoint. A recent Steve Sarkisian interview with ESPN's Chris Low resulted in a line that Texas fans should be giddy about. Sarkisian told ESPN he briefly thought about the Alabama head coaching vacancy, but due to the direction of the Longhorn program under his watch, he did not give it too much consideration. Sarkisian then says he believes the Texas Football program is on the cusp of "going on a run that will be epic." One of my favorite post-game topics of discussion revolves around the three stars of the game. Essentially, who made the most noise on the field and had the best showing during the Longhorns' spring game. Jalen Lott, a sophomore wide receiver and defensive back at Panther Creek in Frisco, won the long jump with a leap of 22-9.5. He also placed fifth in the high jump. His father once held the national high school record in the high jump at 7-4.75. Swayde Griffin, a junior at Lago Vista, won the state 110 hurdles. I am told that Texas continues to scour the portal ranks and is in contact with a couple of prospects. But who is left that the Horns can target? The Horns are looking for potential players at multiple positions. Defensive line continues to be a focus, but it's not the only one. Was out at the McKinney spring game last night to see 2025 top Texas LB target Riley Pettijohn in action. Pettijohn was only featured in three series for the McKinney defense, but his presence was felt when he was on the field. The 6-foot-2 linebacker shows off his speed the instant he steps on the field, it was quite impressive to see when he shoots up the field into the backfield. On the recruiting front, Texas is doing everything right since his last visit. Pettijohn's official visits remain the same. Texas 2025 OV's by area and state Steve Sarkisian and staff are expected to host as many as 50 official visitors in the month of June. Currently, OnTexasFootball has 44 official visits scheduled for the month of June with the state of California having the most on the books in the history of the Texas program. As expected the DFW will have the most OV's in the area within the state line with an uptick in the Houston area in the 2025 cycle. This title and headline would have been scoffed at and mocked just a few years ago. Of course Texas wins the offseason! It is the only time they win anything! It used to be a fun jab at the Longhorn program who was consistently underperformed on the field and in the developmental department. I'm told that Steve Sarkisian is expected to add long-time college recruiting coordinator and professional scout Bill Rees to his football staff. The exact role Rees will have with the team is unclear. Sarkisian re-tooled his off-field support staff this off-season following the departure of former GM Billy Glasscock to Ole Miss. Sarkisian elevated Brandon Harris to GM, John Michael Jones to Director of Player Personnel, Taylor Searels to Director of Recruiting and Kyndal Perry to Director of Recruiting Operations.
