Texas sweeps Texas Tech in WCWS finals, wins second consecutive softball national championship

Texas avoided an if-necessary third game of the Women’s College World Series finals against Texas Tech, following up Wednesday’s 7-3 win over the Red Raiders with Thursday’s 4-1 victory to clinch the Longhorns’ second consecutive national championship.

Texas (53-12) joined Arizona, Florida, Oklahoma and UCLA as the fifth NCAA softball program to win back-to-back softball national titles with a two-game sweep of Texas Tech (61-10). Teagan Kavan, who was named WCWS Most Outstanding Player for the second year in a row, secured the final six outs of the game after Citlaly Gutierrez (4.1 innings) and Hannah Wells (0.2 innings) did their jobs in the circle to help the Longhorns overcome a one-run deficit.

Facing All-American pitcher NiJaree Canady and trailing, 1-0, Texas opened the fifth inning with back-to-back singles by Kaiah Altmeyer and Ashton Maloney. After Jaycie Nichols reached on a fielder’s choice and the Red Raiders intentionally walked Katie Stewart with the bases loaded, a Viviana Martinez ground ball to the left side of the infield turned into a two-run error, putting the Longhorns on top, 2-1.

On the heels of Kavan retiring Texas Tech in order in the bottom of the sixth, Kayden Henry led off the top of the seventh with an opposite-field home run, taking Canady deep to left. With one out and runners on first and second, right fielder Lauren Allred couldn’t come up with a diving catch of a sinking liner off the bat of Leighann Goode, resulting in an RBI single to put Texas up by three runs, 4-1.

Kavan retired each of the six Red Raiders she faced, recording back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

So one sided. I had to watch the game on mute.

I did the same.   One sided and the announcers always over emphasize , maybe just me.   I tried espnu but that wasn’t much better.   Maybe they will improve but these are first world issues

we are Champs 🤘

Agree with this a ton.

I think that Tech folded under pressure in several key spots...

We lose some key players but with Kavan, Katie Stewart, Kayden Henry, Viv Martinez, Jaycie Nichols and Hanna Wells coming back Texas should be primed another title run next season. Just need to find a #2 pitcher and a catcher

I hate seeing Reese Atwood leaving.  She has been a Rock of Gibraltar.

Difference in game 2 was defense The Tech LF made a couple of great plays but the rest of the team was really bad, Texas's defense on the other hand was rock solid

Tech folded under the pressure, imo.  They were not ready for prime time.  I'm not trying to put them down--it's just a fact.

Is it usual to not shake hands after the champ game?  Saw someone tweet that Tech was sour and just started packing their bags instead of going out and congratulating Texas.

Saw several Tech players hugging and congratulating Texas players.

ESPN should be embarrased by the way the broadcast for both games was so Tech centric, It was just nauseating

I had the main broadcast and the alternate broadcast (on ESPNU) on two screens and switched listening back and forth (and sometimes had both on mute).  TBH, I listened to the alternate broadcast more.  Those ladies were mostly entertaining and not Tech homers.  I thought their analysis and commentary was interesting, and they had all played on that stage when they were in college.

The Tech softball coach needs to give their head football coach and the head of the board of regents a lesson in class and humility. I bet he doesn’t stand for players better on their teams, no matter who it is.

Don't know who determines which players are in the postgame press conference, but the absence of Citlaly seems really disrespectful. She went toe to toe with Canady and put Texas in position to win.

We were at a performance at Bass Concert Hall last night, so the moment it was over I headed for the door in order to look to my right at the Tower.

All lit in Burnt Orange...I knew.

Watched the abbreviated replay on YouTube when I got home. You realize that a 70 mph pitch from 42' is on you in .4 sec., quicker than a 92 MPH pitch from 60'?  Great game, great team.  Hook 'em!

It also has less distance available to curve away from your bat.  And of course the ball is like 50% bigger.

Don’t let Kavan leave. She is going to be (already is) in the same sentence as Cat.

She flew by car at this point.

Sportscenter post game still talking about Canady, amazing🤣must not be that great, zero rings

I mean you can’t knock what Canady did for the sport, and the fact she took Tech from nobody to back to back finals….. we were just better as a team. Tip of the hat to Mrs Canady but Hook Em cause we’re the back to back champs. 🤘

Team wise and trophy case, but Cat was beyond dominant as a pitcher with no offense.  On top of the gaudy stats, Cat also lost a bunch of 0-1 games because teams she was on couldn’t score at all.

Cody Campbell’s Twitter page tomorrow, probably:

“No faithful son or daughter of the Scarlet and Black ought be compelled to witness the fruits of their labor carried southward under circumstances most grievous and suspect. That the noble champions of the Plains, having tilled the softball fields with diligence and devotion, should see their hard-earned glory claimed by the Orange Empire is an affront not merely to competition, but to the very spirit of fair play upon which this great sporting republic was imagined to stand. Let it be recorded for posterity that the citizens of Tortilla Country do hereby register their profound displeasure, and shall henceforth regard this episode as yet another chapter in the long chronicle of hardships unjustly borne by the people of West Texas.”

Cody Campbell is a douche canoe.

The only thing better than him living way away from me is me not having any possible relationship to that mind-numbing cretin.  He soils the gene pool.👀🤣

That and intentionally walking Stewart and putting the go ahead run on second. Not the smart move IMO.

More of a panic one, IMHO.  His ace pitcher was struggling a lot, as if she was spent.
