This is the problem. A money-whip (TM) only works when someone is willing to be whipped. If you have a pretty good-sized bank account by your own standards and don't want to lose the biggest job you might get in two years... you stay where you are.

Kentucky offered more money. They are a blue-blood program. Some coaches don’t need to be the highest paid coach. They make millions, win and are happy in their communities. They have already built what they wanted at the school they are at. Gerry said he was hearing Indiana’s top choice was Drew. Otz was second, hell they were down to the Drake coach at one point. Did you see how much money the Lakers offered Hurley last year? Showing a wad of cash to a coach only works if that coach can be money whipped. Urban Meyer said no.

Coaching LeBron seems like an objectively bad job to have considering you have no say in roster and if he wants you fired, you’re fired.

Beard deserved to be fired and the program trajectory under Barnes was tanking so he needed to be let go as well at the time.

Barnes couldn't recruit in Texas as he once had.

One school not in the post season and snubbed for an NCAA tournament bid gets the first year coach from another such school.  Match made in heaven. 

But DeVries is a very good coach who might come with a very good player attached.  I wasn't that big on Tucker, but that 26 point, 6 assist, 0 turnover game in the OT win over Arizona made me a believer that he can be a good P5 player.

No titles in there, but it's pretty hard to argue that 2001-02 to 2007-08  with a Final Four, two more Elite Eights, and two more Sweet Sixteens in a 7 year period were not glory days for our men's basketball program.
