Weird choice…last two UT presidents leave for private institutions.

Hopefully whomever replaces him is aligned top to bottom with BOR and CDC. Alignment is key!

Texas just got moneywhipped. Having your own alumni turn his back on your school is…something. 

He's still my president (since I have a graduate degree from SMU)

It wasn't a surprise to Texas BoR. They were aware.

They'll find a replacement.

From a sports perspective, as long as CDC and Eltife remain aligned, all is good.

Sad to see. I don't know if UT President is a sustainable job long-term but I assumed he'd be here for another 5 years.  Meanwhile the SMU job should be a lifetime appointment until he's tired of it...

A lot more freedom at private schools. No interference from the capitol.

Leaving weeks before a new legislative session is sort of a chickensh*t move, expected more from Hartzell.

I worked in the Legislature, 100% agree. 

This may not be a back-breaker, but it sure doesn't sound good for Texas!

I am sure we’ll get another good president, but I sure don’t like change when we were starting to see the light after years of darkness. One bad choice can screw up alot of stuff.

I don't it was this simple. UT administration was most likely well aware he was leaving.

Being President of UT-Austin is a 5 year job.  The political grind is real, across all the stakeholders (legislature, alumni, students, faculty, tax payers, etc).  I’ve known Jay since before he became President and knew he would be a perfect fit.  It’s too bad he’s leaving, but I’ve always understood that even he, as a proud alum, could only deal with the pressure of the job for so long.  
 

Wish him well and hope the next hire is as good or at least close.  Also, understanding that athletics is the front porch of the university should be part of the search criteria.

What a weird demotion.  We were lucky to have him, he was instrumental on the Atjhletics side and landed CDC.  Hopefully the wokeness doesn't destory our programs (and CDC)

Well, he got his Bachelor's degree at Trinity, not UT, and may like private schools.  Besides, in academics most faculty do not stay at schools where they obtained any of their degrees.

To be fair, it’s typically a five year gig, he did his time and did some great things for Texas Athletics🤘

Okay fine, I'll be the idiot that asks... Any concern of CDC following Hartzell? I'd assume absolutely not but I'm no more than a plebian fan.
