Some practice notes from yesterday... This is not a loaded practice report. But here are few things: - DJ Campbell was back in action. So the shoulder issue that occurred on Saturday, at least for now, seems to have been not much to worry about it. Fingers crossed we don't hear much about it and it was just a bruised shoulder or soreness. - The practice itself was described as lighter yet quicker than usual. As expected, the practice before a scrimmage is almost always a little less intense from a physicality standpoint. Blake Baker has the defensive talent to run his scheme. Garrett N. was ballin, and LSU has explosive playmaking at a number of positions on O. 3. Texas - lost at Ohio State 14-7. By The Numbers – RB Run Game in the SEC *** I have tested the Texas run game to improve and this weekend's matchup with Sam Houston State should provide an opportunity for the Longhorns to take steps in the right direction via the ground game. It was a frustrating afternoon in Austin on Saturday vs. UTEP, but there were some glimmers of hope. Freshman RB James Simon looked impressive. Jerrick Gibson held onto the rock and ran hard. With the bye week here, it is the final "free" weekend for Texas coaches before the end of the season, so naturally they are hitting the road to recruit. As Gerry Hamilton has reported, Steve Sarkisian is expected to be in Dallas today to see not only five-star OL Michael Fasusi but also several other recruits in the area. Perhaps just as noteworthy, Texas assistant Chris Gilbert went to see OL Lamont Rogers in DFW yesterday as well. For the final time in 2025, Texas will take the field. 1st Quarter The Texas offense begins the contest with the ball at the 25. That was one of the fastest paces Texas has shown all season and it results in a field goal. Sark wants this to turn into a track meet it appears. Texas vs. New Orleans The Texas Longhorns play host to New Orleans tonight with just two games remaining until SEC play begins with a trip to College Station January 4. Texas (9-2) is coming off a 121-57 win over a woeful Arkansas-Pine Bluff December 15. New Orleans arrives in Austin 2-7, with high-major losses to Kansas State (89-65), Baylor (91-60) and Iowa (104-57). Texas landed a commitment from Penn pitcher Eli Trop. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound RHP has one year of eligibility remaining. Trop has a 3.07 career ERA, along with 82 strikeouts during those three years. This has been in the works for quite some time, but I’ve sat on it out of respect for Trop. He originally committed in the fall, as Ivy Leagues don’t allow a fifth year. So he entered his name into the portal in October.

I thought Arkansas would be a major trap game for Texas. But this Texas team proved me wrong. Or maybe Arkansas isn't all that good even though they beat Tennessee a month ago. Whatever the case, Texas continues to be a consistently good football team. And I think that consistency is what has separated Texas from every other SEC team this season (except for maybe Texas A&M). The Horns have been consistently good, particularly on defense. Jalen Lott, a sophomore wide receiver and defensive back at Panther Creek in Frisco, won the long jump with a leap of 22-9.5. He also placed fifth in the high jump. Five-star visitor expected Saturday According to a source close to the North Crowley High football program, the Texas Longhorns will host a 5-star unofficial visitor Saturday. North Crowley High 2026 offensive tackle John Turntine III is expected to be in Austin Saturday for the Longhorns spring game. Turntine III was offered by Texas October 28 while on campus for the game vs. BYU. He returned to campus with his father January 20 for the Texas Junior Day.
