My single biggest takeaway from yesterday was the central theme of what I had been hearing behind the scenes. Texas is extremely talented headed into 2026. We watched a Texas squad yesterday virtually without Arch Manning, Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo, Trevor Goosby, Colin Simmons, Ty’Anthony Smith, Xavier Filsaime and Zina Umeozulu. That’s eight future NFL players who were on the sideline. Yet Texas still looked talented. In particular, the rotation on the defensive line bordered on the ridiculous. I was surprised by a lot of things on Saturday afternoon in Gainesville. But I was downright shocked by one: the poor play of the Texas defense. From the very beginning, the interior of the Texas front couldn’t get off blocks. They were whipped time and time again. Florida running backs were allowed to dance in the holes before any Texas defender made contact. And the edges lost contain multiple times. The Gators were in more 2nd and 4s, 5s or 6s, than any of us care to count. Florida controlled the line of scrimmage. That was the story of this game. Some more notes I’ve picked up over the weekend: 1. Just nine practices in, and Bo Mascoe is already considered a lynchpin of the secondary. He’s been that good and that consistent. He is currently CB No. 1 with the clear versatility to play NB if Will Muschamp and Blake Gideon opt for that route. 2. I was told Derrek Cooper is the one freshman who everybody knows will play in 2026. There will be other freshmen join him for sure. But he’s the one where it is already extremely evident. 3. We witnessed something yesterday that I’m not sure everyone will fully appreciate until maybe later this year, or even into the off-season and beyond. We saw Arch Manning grow up. In a game against a quality opponent and rival, he got rid of the ball instead of taking sacks. He took what the defense gave him. He moved in the pocket. He ran effectively. He wasn’t lured into taking multiple deep shots. Instead, he calmly engineered three straight 10-plus play drives against the nation’s top-ranked defense, converting both the easy plays and the difficult ones, all while never putting the ball in harm’s way. Given that so much occurred yesterday, I think a solid recap by position is in order. But first the injury updates. Both Cole Brevard and Nick Brooks went down with injuries during the scrimmage. Brevard later returned to the scrimmage. Brooks did not. But was later seen without any ice, crutches, etc., while walking with a slight limp. Tight end Emaree Winston did not participate in the scrimmage. He injured his shoulder earlier in the week and is expected out for a couple of months. Back-to-back home runs happen all the time. At least a couple of times a season. But back-to-back-to-back? It's rare. And it's particularly rare in the post-season. But that's exactly what Aiden Robbins, Carson Tinney, and Anthony Pack Jr. pulled off in the second inning yesterday at the Disch. Texas bats have erupted in the post-season. Part of me remains in shock this morning, surprised by the QB play we all witnessed Saturday afternoon. I did not see it coming, not this level of struggle. It reached a level of complete ineptness. There were 10 straight incompletions, some that were true misfires, others that were ill-timed, rushed and three or four yards off the mark, one where he didn’t see what should have been his very first read for a first down on a fourth-down play in the red zone and another fourth down play to a wide open Parker Livingston downfield. Rod Babers made the distinction in the post-game show between a team that plays sloppy and one that plays undisciplined. Sloppy happens as times. Undisciplined is a habitual problem. Texas played sloppily yesterday, not undisciplined. What’s the difference? There were no major assignment busts, no crazy personal foul penalties (Florida can tell you about those), and no dumb plays in the face of vital game situations. The pledge of Birmingham (Ala.) defensive lineman Vodney Cleveland gives the Horns three DT recruits in this class. Damari Simeon of New Jersey appears to be leaning the Longhorns’ way, too. I’m reading a lot of comments on the message board about how Texas was “out-physicaled” by Georgia. I agree with that. But only to a degree. The Texas defense was not. The Texas offense was. OTF has been told that Colorado has made seven figure NIL offers to two of Texas' top targets. That is Tyler Alexander (Wellington, Fla./Palm Beach Central) and Ole Miss commit Ben'Jarvius Shumaker (Ackerman, Miss./Choctaw County). Notre Dame outfielder Bino Watters visited Texas A&M during the earlier part of this weekend, followed by visiting Texas yesterday through this morning. That visit is now wrapped up and Watters will head home. I’ve spoken to people on both sides of this recruitment and what I can tell you is that it went really well for the Longhorns.
