Is Jordan Seaton going into the portal or not? The Colorado offensive lineman announced his intentions to do so on Monday. Yet here we are on Thursday morning, and he is - at least as of the time I’m typing this column - still not in the portal, exceeding the two-business-day lag usually seen in these scenarios. If Seaton does not enter, it will be mildly unsurprising. Of course Colorado wants to keep one of the best players in college football. Of course they’d do as much as possible to thwart his departure. But if he does actually enter, then I think the games have only begun. A multitude of teams will be lined up for him, Texas included. He will be the h…

Texas received good news yesterday when Ethan Mendoza made the decision to return to school. Longhorns assistant coach Troy Tulowitzki met with Mendoza and his family yesterday at their home in Bedford and the two parties agreed it would be best for him to finish his final year of college baseball in Austin. Unfortunately for Mendoza, he will require shoulder surgery, which is set to take place this week. As far as a timetable for a return goes, that is currently up in the air. Last season Mendoza went .278 at the plate with 52 runs, 14 doubles, 10 home runs, 50 RBI and 11 stolen bases. -- If Mendoza isn't ready by the time practice rolls around, …

Texas Hoops: Traore; international guards in play Sean Miller and staff have three more spots to fill on the 2025-26 roster. As it stands now, the Texas roster continues to appear in a number of way too early top 25 rankings. But the work is far from done with two guard spots remaining. Texas will added 6-10 rebounder and defender Lassina Traore to complete the frontcourt. Miller has addressed the needed height and length in the program in short order. The current Texas roster now features six players that stand 6-foot-8 or more. The four portal transfers thus far stand 7-foot, 6-foot-10, 6-foot-8 and a very athletic 6-foot-7. Add in three young bigs Jaim…

Texas Hoops: Three scholarships remain; one key need Sean Miller and staff have three more scholarships possible to fill on the 2025-26 roster. The Texas roster is appearing in a number of way too early top 25 rankings. That includes a couple of ranking with Texas at No. 18 and No. 20, but that will likely only come to fruition if Miller and staff hit on the next two guard spots. Miller immediately addressed the needed height and length in the program in short order. The current Texas roster now features six players that stand 6-foot-8 or more. The four portal transfers thus far stand 7-foot, 6-foot-10, 6-foot-8 and a very athletic 6-foot-7. Add in three young b…

Six games in, we have now reached the midway point in the season. And some Texas players who have not seen much action (playing in four games or less) are making and/or contemplating decisions about redshirting and then possibly transferring. Yesterday, we heard of one such player who is opting to take the redshirt with the intent of entering the portal in December. He will not play the rest of the season. While we are not going to name the player until he or the team announces it, I can say the player is not a front-line player and really does not have a clear path to the field or to be a large contributor long-term at Texas. Bottom line: these things…

The news of Louisville running back Isaac Brown entering the portal is one to watch. While most of the portal attention for Texas fans at running back has centered around the decision of Florida's Jaden Baugh, Brown is someone we've mentioned on multiple broadcasts. He is a big-time home run hitter. He averaged more than 8 yards per carry in 2025, finishing the season with 884 yards on 101 carries. In 2023 as a freshman, he recorded 1175 yards rushing on 165 carries. In 2025 alone, he had five runs of longer than 50 yards. He is a mix between Tre Wisner and Jaydon Blue IMO. Brown is 5-9, 190 pounds and is originally from Miami. View full news sto…

Cam Coleman, the no. 1 overall player in the transfer portal, returned to his home state of Alabama yesterday after back-to-back visits to Texas and Texas A&M. As of yesterday evening, Texas continues to have confidence. Coleman will still visit Texas Tech this week, although USC is now out of the picture. Coleman appears to be nearing an end-of-week decision timeline. Again, I like where Texas stands, but there’s still more recruiting to do. ** Michigan offensive linemen Andrew Sprague and Jake Guarnera returned to Michigan yesterday and were expected to visit with new Wolverine coach Kyle Whittingham. The outcome of that meeting re…

Texas Men's Portal Thread: Texas has one possible spot remaining The Texas staff has crushed it in the portal. A top 10 level team has been built wonderfully. There is one final piece that is possible to be added, and it could play out a little while. OTF expects Texas to sign an experienced role player backup 5-man, assuming the Longhorns can find the fit at the NIL allotment wanted. The portal additions (to this point): April 11 - Isaiah Johnson, lead guard, Colorado - OTF projects Johnson as a future 1st/2nd round NBA draft pick after the 2027 or 2028 season. April 12 - David Punch, PF, TCU - OTF projects Punch as a future 2nd round NBA draft pick af…

Blake Gideon is set to return to Austin as the Longhorns safeties coach in 2026. Gideon was the Longhorns’ safeties coach in 2024 and helped orchestrate a top ten defense with a hand over the backend of the defense. Georgia Tech hired Gideon as their defensive coordinator for the 2025 season, though after one year, Gideon returns to Austin. This time, he reunites with Will Muschamp, who he played for in 2008-2010. View full news story

Some folks have suggested multiple reasons for Texas’ recent swoon in recruiting. Well, I’m here to tell you that there’s really only one reason - NIL. If this were just a year ago, and Texas had more funds to distribute, there’s little doubt in my mind that the Longhorns would hold the no. 1 recruiting class in the country. The reception Texas has been receiving on the recruiting trail has been enormous. But, unfortunately, it’s not last year. The House Settlement was passed and the recruiting class of 2026 must abide by it (at least some of the schools seem prepared to truly abide by it, Texas included). So we’re effectively entering a new dawn of re…

Hoops: Texas at Vanderbilt Game Thread The Texas Longhorns are back in must win mode, and they face the task of winning on the road at Vanderbilt today at noon central. Texas (15-8, 4-6) will take on an ascending Vanderbilt (16-6, 4-5) program without Tramon Mark, who is out of action Saturday. That leaves the Horns without two guard with Chendall Weaver still expected to be out one more week. The Commodores have already won seven more games this season than 2023-24, when they posted a 9-23 record and made a coaching change. First year coach Mark Byington is one of the rising coaches in the college ranks. Texas' NCAA NET ranking fell from No. 25 to …

A pair of nuggets out of the portal. *** First and foremost, former UCF DL Lee Hunter is in Lubbock, Texas today meeting with Texas Tech and the Red Raiders. Tech has been very aggressive with their portal recruitments so far this window and they will be very much the same with Hunter today. Texas is scheduled to host him later in the week in Austin. *** Former Georgia Tech WR Eric Singleton Jr. is on campus today in Austin. Coach Chris Jackson is hosting his first portal receiver of the cycle and the Longhorns are pitching the big play ability of Singleton this afternoon. Singleton also ran track at Georgia Tech, will be interesting if…

I wanted to be as informed and measured as I could be in my article this morning, so I waited to write this column until after re-watching the game. ** This will be of no surprise to any of you. Steve Sarkisian and Arch Manning did not have good games. Both of them. Arch as a player and Sark as a coach. Let’s start with Arch. He looked ok early on, converting three third-and-longs, and scrambling for another first down. But then he airmailed a crossing route to Ryan Wingo in the first quarter and Jack Endries in the second and he seemed to never be the same again. It’s almost like he went in the tank. After that, it seemed that he really…

Texas will be on the hunt for another assistant coach. It was confirmed to me that Texas RB coach Tashard Choice will be headed to the NFL to join the Detroit Lions staff. Choice notified members of the staff and team Thursday morning that he would be leaving the Longhorns and headed to the NFL. A significant hit to the Texas staff on and off the field.
