Some notes from Thursdays practice and a little more: ** All off-season we were told that Texas was planning on utilizing Cole Hutson and Neto Umeozulu more during games, not strictly relying on a five-man OL rotation like the Horns did most of 2023. I'm told that some of that rotation occurred on Thursday. The Horns are beginning to get the team and the offensive unit used to it. Hutson, at times, replaced DJ Campbell at right guard and Neto Umeozulu replaced Hayden Conner at left guard during the team session with the first unit on Thursday. I thought about changing the title to this morning’s post from “Saturday” to something more clever and representative of these two teams renewing a rivalry the state has missed so much. But I decided not to, in part because I don’t think this Texas football team needs to materially change who they are today to win this football game in College Station. Texas has a strong defense. The Horns have an offense that can be hit or miss, but one that has also proven they can beat an opponent in multiple ways and come through in the clutch. Texas is experienced across the board. With the Longhorns in the national semifinals, Texas is now playing with house money IMO. Anything beyond a final four finish is gravy. The news of Cade Haug’s decommitment caught me by surprise yesterday, but hey, modern recruiting is modern recruiting. I actually liked that Texas took Haug’s commitment but I understand and respect the front office staff for staying put on their number. Yes, the current linebacker picture is bleak with Houston commit Jerrell Bridges being the only target the Longhorns seem to be in on at this juncture. A topic of conversation this week leading up to the Texas-Texas A&M game is the health of quarterback Quinn Ewers and his ankle. First and foremost, Ewers has practiced each day this week and to his credit, has increased intensity each day as the week has progressed. Still, there is a bit of a hobble to his movements due to the ankle. Based off of everything I have heard this week, all signs point to Ewers starting this game for the Longhorns. Just keep the faith.” That’s seemingly what Steve Sarkisian was reminding us all of yesterday following the flip of Folsom, Calif., defensive tackle Josiah Sharma from Oregon to Texas. Sark, in typical Sark style, scoffed at the idea of recruiting being all about early commitments and landed one of his very top defensive tackles in the country. Texas clinched its fourth Director’s Cup as the nation’s best college athletic program in the last five years last night. The Texas women’s track team finished in 10th place, which was just enough to out point USC and Stanford. The winner of the Director’s Cup was literally decided on the second to last race of the women’s meet last night. A win is a win but it was truly by the narrowest of margins. How close? Had a Stanford runner finished in second in the 5,000 meters instead of third (something Stanford challenged), the Cardinal would have won the cup by virtue of moving up overall in the track standings. Kyle Flood comes away with a huge victory off the west coast with the addition of Mills, beating out Washington as the largest competitor. A few notes from late summer offseason workouts ahead of fall camp beginning next week. *** – I was able to get a look at Alfred Collins walking into the facility on Thursday afternoon. The recent Texas roster update has Collins listed at 320 pounds and let me tell you, even after being listed at 315 a year ago, his body looks significantly different. Collins looks wider than he ever has at Texas. News broke yesterday that safety Michael Taaffe had surgery on Monday on his thumb. The injury and procedure are likely to keep Taaffe out this week and possibly next, with the potential of a return for the Georgia game, according to CJ Vogel. Of course, we won’t know the plans for sure until we receive Steve Sarkisian’s injury report later this afternoon. We expect experience veteran Derrick Williams to start in place of Taaffe.
