Few team notes picked up recently: The freshmen Have spoken with a few people the last couple of weeks with spring ball having concluded. Here is what I picked up along the way. 1. OTF had already mentioned that the staff really likes both freshmen DT's - Myron Charles and Josiah Sharma. Sharma's name came up again late last week as having a very high-ceiling. 2. Texas Signs Wake Forest WR Sterling Berkhalter *** Portal work doesn’t stop! The Texas Longhorns have signed former Wake Forest WR Sterling Berkhalter out of the portal after a visit to campus on Thursday. Berkhalter will be entering his sixth season of college football after receiving a medical waiver earlier in the week. Berkhalter is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio and originally spent his first two seasons of college at North Carolina A&T. He was inactive in 2023 in his first year at Cincinnati. We mentioned this morning that Jonah Williams is practicing more completely with the team. Now we can report fellow blue chip freshman DB Kade Phillips is no longer truly limited either. Both had been nursing hamstring issues to start training camp. I didn’t get to say much when it happened, but I want to mention it now. Jack Endries has wrestled with the decision to turn pro or return to Texas since the A&M game. He remains likely to turn pro. After all, that was the plan prior to the season beginning. And some draft boards have him among the top five tight ends available. Percentages on Texas official visitors last weekend The Texas Longhorns hosted nine defensive official visitors over the weekend, and the Longhorns would currently accept commitments from all of them. With the understanding that all recruitments aren't the same from an NIL and timeline standpoint. Given that so much occurred yesterday, I think a solid recap by position is in order. But first the injury updates. Both Cole Brevard and Nick Brooks went down with injuries during the scrimmage. Brevard later returned to the scrimmage. Brooks did not. But was later seen without any ice, crutches, etc., while walking with a slight limp. Tight end Emaree Winston did not participate in the scrimmage. He injured his shoulder earlier in the week and is expected out for a couple of months. Texas football coaches are back in the office. The coaches, the majority of them, actually returned yesterday morning from vacation. That’s when Tashard Choice told his peers and others in the building he was headed to the NFL. While it caught us off guard, Choice’s move was not entirely surprising. It was quite the day for the Longhorns, as they landed two players out of the portal who will immediately make the team better. We first saw Texas get a commitment from Stanford’s Temo Becerra. While he can essentially play any infield position, he should start at shortstop. It’s worth noting that the staff feels he’s better defensively than UVA’s Eric Becker. Offensively Becerra is solid. The Texas offense currently can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. That much is clear. So every time I think it might be because of a lack of offensive ingenuity, I remember that this team can’t do the basics very well. Arch inexplicably fumbles a snap in the red zone. Given all of that, how is Sark going to be comfortable calling something that requires more finesse? This is not all on Arch though. The blocking in the red zone remains leaky at best, especially on the right side. Perimeter blocking is still an issue, as are penalties, as are running backs missing running lanes. Mini update on Derrek Cooper Texas commit and OTF 5-star running back Derrek Cooper attended the Notre Dame at Miami game Sunday, as expected. In talking to a source close to the recruitment, Cooper remains as solid to Texas as you can be in today’s day and age of recruiting. The Texas staff understands Miami will go hard after Cooper (and DL James Johnson) until deep into November. The staff is playing the long game, as always. On Texas Football can confirm OL Laurence Seymore's eligibility waiver has been approved and the Western Kentucky OL will be allowed to play for the Longhorns this fall, Anwar Richardson the first to report.
