What I mentioned in this column yesterday morning became public by yesterday afternoon. Sophomore running back Jerrick Gibson has left the program. Gibson’s role never quite took off at Texas. While some will point to his tendency to fumble, I think it’s actually more definitive than that. Gibson just wasn’t as good as Tre Wisner and is not appreciatively more talented than Christian Clark or James Simon. So when you add his propensity to fumble on top of it, Gibson just had no real advantage other than his size over the other runners. Size just isn’t enough to ever be a front-line guy at Texas. Practice Updates on Arch Manning and Michael Taaffe *** – I have been told that Texas is doing whatever they can to get QB Arch Manning cleared and on the field for this weekend's game against Vanderbilt. Manning has been present at practice leading up to Wednesday, but mostly as a spectator. Yesterday was a whirlwind. Texas zigged when everyone else was waiting for them to zag. Instead of Colorado offensive lineman Jordan Seaton visiting the Longhorns, it was Wake Forest offensive lineman Melvin Siani who signed with the Longhorns. Based on what I've been told, those two are making the most disruptive plays so far on defense. What do they have in common? Elite quickness and speed for the position they play. But they also give up a little size for their positions. As the pads come on this week, let's see if the disruption trend carries on. Not that excuses are worth much, but Steve Sarkisian revealed yesterday that not only was Texas without Michael Taaffe and Jelani McDonald on Saturday, but Manny Muhammad was also sidelined for a while during the game. That means the Horns were without three starters against Vandy at times. Again, it’s no excuse for a fourth quarter meltdown. But context is important. Where is Arch Manning in the concussion protocol? Better yet, does that even matter? Facts are, while Manning might be on schedule in the protocol to return this weekend, it doesn’t mean he will necessarily play on Saturday or that that’s what would be best for him. A 380-pound BOOM! Arkansas nose tackle Ian Geffrard has committed to Texas following his two-day visit to Austin. Geffrard recorded 463 snaps for the Razorbacks in 2025, and recorded 18 tackles and 8 pressures on the quarterback. OTF has been told that Colorado has made seven figure NIL offers to two of Texas' top targets. Whew. In a win-or-go-home game, the Longhorns ran off to a big lead early then held on late. No heroics from Cade Klubnik could save the Tigers. And no amount of injuries were enough to derail the Texas offense. Texas was simply too good for Clemson. The Horns flexed their depth to prove just that.
