2027 Recruiting: January offers (New offers Thursday in Florida, Alabama & New Jersey) The Texas staff has been coast-to-coast this month evaluating prospects in the class of 2027 with today the final day scheduled for in-person evaluations. Texas has extended 30 news offers with linebacker and defensive back taking center stage with Will Muschamp back in Austin. All told, 24 of the new offers are on defense. The Texas Longhorns have signed former Wake Forest WR Sterling Berkhalter out of the portal after a visit to campus on Thursday. Berkhalter will be entering his sixth season of college football after receiving a medical waiver earlier in the week. Berkhalter is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio and originally spent his first two seasons of college at North Carolina A&T. He was inactive in 2023 in his first year at Cincinnati. Yesterday, The Athletic reported that LSU was sent a letter of inquiry by the College Sports Commission, the new enforcement arm of the NCAA for NIL. Well, it sounded interesting and possibly consequential. Until some Baton Rouge reporters dug in. 1. The inquiry was not about football. 2. LSU says they expect to resolve the matter soon. In other words, the scoop of the CSC going after LSU was really no scoop at all.

Texas isn’t done yet in the 2026 class! The Longhorns secure a commitment from 2026 DL Elijah Ali after an official visit this weekend. Ali intends to sign with Texas on signing day February 4th. Ali is listed as a 6-foot-5, 285-pound defensive lineman. The Gardena, California native will join the Longhorns in the summer after his signature on the final signing day period. With the addition of defensive lineman Elijah Ali, Texas will likely finish the 2026 recruiting class with 23 signees. Add in 19 portal transfers, and the Longhorns will have 42 new faces in the 2026 season. That’s roughly half of the entire roster. ** Four of the high school recruits are defensive linemen: Ali along with James Johnson, Jamarrion Carlton and Richard Wesley, although Carlton and Wesley will start at defensive end. Haug was on campus this weekend for an unofficial visit which went well enough to end up joining the Longhorns class after getting home and talking with his family. I watched Chris Del Conte’s Town Hall last night. First and foremost, there were no “gotchas”. There was no extremely bad news or news that fundamentally changed the outlook of the athletic department. I listened intently. There wasn’t even an inkling of a department weaving slightly off course. Instead, he discussed the progress of initiatives already well underway (like the football indoor facility) and gave a sneak peek into plans for the future (a re-imagined softball stadium). Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte announced Wednesday evening at the Texas Town Hall the spring game will be returning in just a few months. I am sure many of you already have, but if you have not, mark you calendars for April 18th. The Longhorns went without a spring game in 2025, opting for a lighter work load in the spring and ultimately saving the idea of displaying young talent out to the world knowing the spring portal was about to open.
