  1. Started by Bobby Burton,

I pride myself in being more plugged in to what’s going on behind the scenes at Texas than anybody who is not a part of the athletic department. Yet yesterday was a surprise to me. In fact, I had to read the press release twice, then immediately call someone at Texas just to make sure we weren’t being pranked. All of it was true. Texas hired Will Muschamp to return as the defensive coordinator while letting go of Pete Kwiatkowski. ** In the aftermath, I did some digging on questions about the move. - Let’s talk about the “when”. I’m told the deal started coming together about 2-to-2.5 weeks ago. - And now the “why”. Sark, …

  2. New report from our @Bobby Burton on Coffee & Football this morning: – Texas tight end Jack Endries WILL play in the Citrus Bowl for the Longhorns on December 31st. Following the bowl game, Endries will make a decision regarding his future – NFL or returning to Texas. Endries met with Steve Sarkisian and the Texas staff on Thursday and opted for this course of action regarding his future. No ultimate decision regarding his future has been made just yet, that will come in early January. View full news story

  6. Started by Bobby Burton,

Not sure how many of you watched the OU-Alabama game last night. The Sooners lost 34-24 after going up 17-0. Quarterback John Mateer was the focal point of an OU offense that scored just seven points over the final 40 minutes of the game and threw a pick six that completely changed the complexion of the game. ** So this is what I want to discuss this morning: If you were the GM of OU, would you bring Mateer back for 2026? Mateer led the Sooners to a 10-2 regular season record and into the CFP. And he could return to Norman next season. On the other side of the coin, guys like Sam Leavitt of Arizona State and Brendan Sorsby of Cincinnati …

  7. The No. 2 ranked Longhorns are 13-0 heading into today’s matchup at South Dakota State. While they’ve had no trouble beating five Top 25 opponents (with the majority being in the Top 15) during that time, one thing that has been an issue is the health of the team. That is slowly changing for the better. The first positive development came earlier this week when senior guard Ashton Judd returned to the court in Texas’ 96-38 beat down of Northwestern State. Now, there’s more positive news for Vic Schaefer and his team, as I’m told that sophomore guard Bryanna Preston is cleared and could see action today. The only missing piece of the health puzzl…

  8. 2027 recruiting class possibilities: A look by position While the Texas staff doesn't hit the road to make continued evaluations in the 2027 cycle until January, there are already some knowns in the direction Texas hopes to take the class. This morning, OTF takes a look at the possibilities by position. Quarterback (1)... TBD. Texas will likely make a new offer here. Running back (2) ... Jabbar Juluke has made one offer, but there will be more next month. The offer is DeSoto High's SaRod Baker (5-10, 185). Wide receiver (1-2) ... Texas has one of the cycles elite prospects in the boat, Easton Royal (New Orleans/Brother Martin). The p…

  9. Started by Bobby Burton,

I didn’t get to say much when it happened, but I want to mention it now. Jack Endries has wrestled with the decision to turn pro or return to Texas since the A&M game. He remains likely to turn pro. After all, that was the plan prior to the season beginning. And some draft boards have him among the top five tight ends available. Even the advice of nearly every agent these days is for a draft-able player to sit out their non-playoff bowl game. Well, Endries couldn’t do it. He likes football too much. And he is genuinely considering returning to Texas in 2026. While a lot of guys with NFL possibilities are opting out, players like Endries, Jelan…

  10. BREAKING: DL Hero Kanu to Return to Texas for 2026 Season *** After walking on Senior Day ahead of the regular season finale against Texas A&M, defensive lineman Hero Kanu was thought to be off to the NFL. However, On Texas Football is reporting that Kanu is returning to Texas for the 2026 season. Kanu started all 12 games for the Longhorns this season, racking up 435 total snaps, 4.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and 31 total tackles. After three seasons at Ohio State, mostly in a reserve role, Kanu transferred to Texas ahead of the 2025 season and ended up logging the most time on the field of any defensive lineman on the roster. Additionally,…

  11. Started by Bobby Burton,

We’ve mentioned multiple times over the last couple of weeks how Texas, its coaches and personnel staff, are meeting with players (and sometimes their agents as well) prior to next semester. The topics of discussion hinge around plans for next year for the player and then can proceed to NIL. The important point I am trying to make here is that it is not as simple as a single conversation. It is a longer process than many might assume and one that encompasses multiple aspects of a player’s (and the team’s) future. That’s why we are still hearing about and awaiting the decisions of several players who might return, who might go pro or who might opt to enter t…

  13. Latest on the Portal Entrances and Rumors *** The news of DeAndre Moore's departure should not come as a surprise for anyone who has been following OTF for the last month. Though, the destination likely comes as a new twist. Moore was originally expected to enter the NFL Draft. From an outsiders' view, the loss of DeAndre Moore is significant. However, this was a move that had been building up more and more in the past. You can revisit a post I made on OTF from December 9th that alluded to Moore departing. So in reality, this announcement did not catch anyone off guard inside of Moncrief. – But there is something else I wanted to mention in …

  14. Started by Bobby Burton,

A couple of players who have announced for the portal to know: CB Bo Mascoe - Rutgers DL Ian Geffrard - Arkansas Before becoming an Honorable Mention All-Big 10 selection in 2025, Mascoe played for and was recruited to Rutgers by current Texas cornerbacks coach Mark Orphey. He totaled more than 50 tackles and made one interception this season. He’s originally from Kissimmee, Fla. Geffrard, who is originally from Georgia, is a 6-foot-5, 360-pound interior run-stopper and lane plugger. He started all 12 games for the Razorbacks this season. While Geffrard has announced he is entering the portal, it should be noted that Arkansas continues to rec…

  15. What Skills Must Portal Targets Possess for Me? *** I just wrapped up filming the Recruiting Breakdown with @Jeff Howe and @Gerry Hamilton and during the episode we ventured into some prerequisites necessary when evaluating options and ultimately finding pieces for the 2026 roster. It got me thinking, what prereqs would be required, or should be required, if I were to construct a roster out of the portal, knowing the needs Texas currently has in its 2026 outlook. So, I will try and go position by position to breakdown what requirements I would be searching for given positions Texas is expected to pursue out of the portal in January. – Also, just s…

  16. 2023 Recruiting Class: After three seasons The second back-to-back top 5 class signed by Steve Sarkisian and staff has three regular seasons on the Forty Acres in the books. That means, the class is draft eligible and has had the time to create roles as both starters and backups. This morning, OnTexasFootball takes a look at the class as it stands headed into the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl and 2026 NFL Draft. Three and done .. Anthony Hill, LB, Denton (Texas) Ryan Recruiting Industry ranking: 5-star 2026 NFL Draft: 1st or 2nd round Malik Muhammad, CB, Dallas (Texas) South Oak Cliff Recruiting Industry ranking: top 75 2026 NFL Draft: Second day pi…

  17. Started by Bobby Burton,

Texas players have headed home for the holidays. But that doesn’t mean the football offices are empty. Rather, Steve Sarkisian, Brandon Harris and the rest of the Texas football staff are extremely busy working with agents about next year’s team. The negotiation of players is in full swing across the country. And true to form, some agents are overreaching, which only protracts the process, while others seemingly have a better handle on market value. It’s the new way of the world. It’s happening everywhere, including Texas. But specifically for Texas, I mentioned a “protracted process” for some. It’s important to know that that additional time…

  18. What the 2027 NFL Draft could look like It's still fairly early to have a great feel for what the 2027 NFL Draft will look like. That's because there are some decisions by juniors still remaining that will likely help shape the top 50 picks or so in 2027. With that being said, it's not too early to take a snap shot glance at many of the players that will be draft eligible, and how the early mocks could look. I put players in tiers to start until we know for sure which juniors with decisions to make (Ohio State OL's for instance) have announced. There is tier 1, which is top 10 level. There isn't 10 right now. Tier 2, which is top 30 type potential …

  19. My Portal Christmas List for Those Who Have Announced Intention to Transfer *** First and foremost, Merry Christmas Eve to everyone! I wanted to put together a quick exercise of my Portal Wish List ahead of Christmas. For this act, I am only using names of those who have announced their intention to enter the portal. So for a guy like Jadan Baugh, who has not announced, he will be excluded from this list. *** Running Back NC State RB Hollywood Smothers I don't love the running back group in the portal at the moment. The best – say five backs – have yet to announce for this portal window in my opinion. With that said, Smothers is a baller. …

  20. Started by Bobby Burton,

After taking a short break for Christmas, most Texas players returned to campus late yesterday afternoon. The team is leaving for Orlando later today on a chartered plane. They’ll have a round of practices over the next four days followed by the game on Wednesday. ** According to ESPN, Michigan is focusing its efforts on Kyle Whittingham, the former Utah coach, to serve as its next head coach. The move wouldn’t affect next week’s Citrus Bowl - unless some players decide to opt out - but it would certainly impact the Longhorns’ game with the Wolverines in Austin in 2027. Whittingham is known as a defense-first head coach. ** Gerry reporte…

  21. What's Next in the Texas RB Room *** The news of Tre Wisner's portal entrance was unfortunate for me. Wisner was one of the first recruits I covered from the very beginning of his recruitment. Before Texas offered, I had made several stops to Connally to see him. When Texas got involved, I was up there even more. He grew into a heck of a player and ultimately a fan-favorite during his time on the 40. And he did so by hard work and relentless effort. – Looking towards this week, the Texas RB room will essentially be brand new. There is no Wisner, CJ Baxter or Jerrick Gibson. By the way, those were the three leading rushers for the team in…

  22. I spent a lot of Friday tracking down some of the specifics that went into the surprising decision from Texas running back Tre Wisner to enter the portal the day after Christmas. While I had been consistent throughout the month in my reporting of Wisner's impending decision, do not get me wrong, the choice was a surprise. And it was upsetting to a degree. A former three-star recruit who earned a spot on the field through determination and opportunity, Wisner never looked back in the 2024 when he rushed for 1000+ yards and etched his name into Longhorn Lore with performances against Texas A&M and Oklahoma. I could go on about Wisner, but ultimately the …

  23. Notes from Orlando Some team notes I've picked up in the last 24 hours in Orlando. Don't sleep on Lacey ... I'm talking K.J. Lacey, not Kewan Lacey guys. 😂 In speaking with a source, to say redshirting freshman QB K.J. Lacey has impressed since being on campus would be an understatement. He's viewed as a quick study, along with having natural playmaking skills and a fearlessness about the way he attacks the game and position. Obviosly, he was well coached at Saraland High by Jeff Kelly. His feet and reactive quickness adapted quickly to the speed of the game when he arrived last spring, and that allowed him to advance quickly in terms of his performance.…

From the agent world, we’re hearing some very encouraging news for the Horns as it relates to a potential portal transfer. Would immediately be at the top or one of the top 2-3 at his position available. Plays defense. That’s all we’ll say for now. Portal officially opens Jan. 2. View full news story
