With Spears Jr. ... he is making a fair # in year one from what I hear. This wasn't a bargain recruitment for Texas. That was Austin Goosby who took half of what BYU was offering to be at Texas. But t

Seems like we have good reason to have a thread to chat on all summer and through the season.    Team workouts begin June 1, I believe

I do think Texas is potentially better at every position (not to start the season at SG), with one distinction ... Texas played two SF's last year and not a traditional 4 man, so they are combined.

So the dream class is Beckham Black, Marcus Spears Jr and this dude?

Texas really likes Wabbington too

I have a hard time seeing Black pick Texas with Isaiah Johnson at Texas, and not a lock to be in NBA draft after 2026-27

Has there been any movement in regards to basketball freshman recruiting? I dont really know the timeline for this stuff compared to football. Ik we're probably very involved with Spears Jr, Beckham Black, and Reese Alston. Alston recently mentioned in an On3 article a top 5 schools hes been talking to, including Louisville, Purdue, Texas, Kentucky, and U of H, but nothing really of note for Texas. I thought i mightve heard Gerry mention that a&m would be a player for Alston, but I could be misremembering. When does basketball recruiting begin to heat up? Thanks

Unofficial visits will begin for Texas shortly. The 6-4 scoring guard Justin Wise I've mentioned in this thread is scheduled to be on campus next week.

In terms of 2027's making decisions ... the September-late October OV's will be the whole deal for the majority of prospects the level Texas will be after.

Beckham Black is the top PG target in the cycle, Reese Alston is No. 2. I don't recall even mentioning A&M and Reese. They weren't ever going to be a factor. He's a blue blood'ish recruitment.

Yeah. He's very, very athletic. Elite pure athlete. Very good open court passer/vision. He did pick A&M. Not a quality basketball decision IMO.

He has to develop his game off two feet. Has to build the scoring part of his game to more consistency in future years.

Mikey Lewis continues to impress. His ability off the bounce to get clean looks has impressed daily since arriving.

Is there a possibility of Lewis starting over Goosby?

Always possible I suppose. I'm not sure this team will have a locked in lineup at start of season ... could see tinkering.

Mikey Lewis is extremely inviting as a 6th man for me on this team long term

There's a possible leap for someone as explosive as he is coming out of that more restricted system Randy Bennett ran at St Mary's compared to Sean Miller.

Random question: In your time covering recruiting has there been a time where one state had both the #1 & #2 players in the nation for football (Brewster & Meredith) and basketball (Spears Jr & Black) at the same time? I'm sure its happened for Florida, California or maybe Georgia but just curious about that.

Definitely not off the top of my head. Especially with how much players are moving around and reclassifying in recent years.

So we are winning it all this year got it might have to actually watch some game since Gerry has me convinced it’s natty or bust for this team 👀

I don’t think Oregon has ever made a big push in basketball, Joe Z. You do this post here on accident? Or do you have a different PNW team for basketball?
