While the general public thinks the college football season doesn’t come until Labor Day or so, the kickoff for the 2026 football season actually starts this week, at least for those that cover the sport. For years on end, the Texas High School Coaches Association would mark the start of the season for me. Now, it’s the THSCA convention and the SEC Media Days. Both are this week and OTF will be on site. I’ll be in Tampa for the SEC Media, along with Gerry, Hank, Jeff, CJ and Matt. Blake, Jeff and Jordan will be in Houston for THSCA. While official numbers may be hard to come by, the NIL festivities held in Austin were a resounding success. The Texas One Fund, the university’s chosen fundraising arm for NIL activities, is thought to have raised several million dollars over the weekend through its Friday golf tournament and Saturday night concert. There has still been no resolution between Texas and at least one of its current players. Our understanding is that the player has filled out the paperwork to go into the portal, but has not been populated into the portal yet. Texas apparently has until Wednesday to do so, which is two business days from Friday (Monday is MLK day, so it is not considered a business day). ** Texas is still open to players who enter the portal officially next week. Sunshine State 4-star++ sets June OV OnTexasFootball made a couple of calls in the Pensacola today, and picked some OV news. 4-star++ EDGE Trenton Henderson (Pensacola/Catholic) is scheduled to make an OV to Texas June 13-15. That is a shift, as the Florida Gators had been expecting to receive an OV that weekend. The 6-4.5, 225-pounder is also scheduled to make OV’s to Auburn May 16-18, LSU May 30-June 2, Michigan June 6-8 and either Florida or USC June 20-22. He was suspended for a couple of games earlier this year for refusing to go into a game. Yet Mitchell had seemingly turned a corner later in the year and had earned more playing time. One of the players we were concerned about potentially entering the portal was defensive tackle Sydir Mitchell. The talented sophomore from Oradell, N.J., struggled early in spring camp with his weight and conditioning, perhaps due to some lingering medical issues. However, Mitchell finished the spring strong. Arizona cornerback Tacario Davis has decided to withdraw his name from the transfer portal. Davis had spoken with Texas, as well as several other schools, after previously entering his name in the portal. Davis led the PAC-12 in PBUs last year with 15.

A couple of takeaways from the media availability time. *** – First, the entire Texas team made the quick trip over to the College Football Hall of Fame – including Lance Jackson, Michael Terry III, Justus Terry and new portal addition DL Cole Brevard from Purdue. Texas' Roster Release + Week 1 of Practice The Texas Football 2025 Spring roster has been updated, creating one of my favorite days of the year when I can sit and scroll down the website while observing weight gains, number changes and acclimating my brain with the early enrollees. A few nuggets, I wanted to share from the roster update that I have yet to mention elsewhere. – CB Wardell Mack ran with the first team at STAR on Tuesday. Is that a surprise? Perhaps. A 15-pound increase from a year ago at this time. I saw Ewers at the MPA where he looked the most physically fit that I have seen him in his Texas career. Arch Manning is listed at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds. Credit to Trey Owens for completely buying into the offseason weight program. Some quick takeaways from the Texas Elite Camp after having some time to digest the event. *** Starting with five-star North Crowley OT John Turntine III. Texas has done a mighty fine job early on in this recruitment and I have to tip my cap to Kyle Flood here.
