Day One Impressions: - Michael Taaffe broke the team down to start practice. Last year, it was Quinn Ewers on day one and Barryn Sorrell on day two. - Last year, we would have graded the punting unit a D or so. With the new punter, Texas has a chance to get a A or A+. More distance, significantly more hang time. It is literally like the difference between daylight and dark. I spent most of Wednesday’s practice window open to the media with the offensive line. Even during a training camp in which Kyle Flood is trying to replace four departed starters, the group looked so focused, hungry and in tune with the flow of practice that you’d never know such turnover existed. I’ll start with what was ultra-obvious to me on the first day: Texas is an extremely talented squad. Extremely. Yes, that was expected. But I’m not sure even folks who have been watching Texas this long understand just how rare this is. Texas will hold its fourth practice of training camp later today. It’s scheduled to begin at 6:30pm, just like last night. The first two practices were held in the mid-afternoon of the Texas heat. They’re meant to get a team prepared for the worst conditions. The team got a real feel for that. One Texas player was severely dehydrated and subsequently missed the next couple of practices (yes, I know who it is, but, no, I’m not going to name them). They take the day off today and get back at it on Monday. ** I am told each practice consistently became more and more physical as the week progressed. There were a couple of extra curricular activities during the live action between the offense and defense. Upon the second one occurring, Sark wasn’t playing around anymore. I was reminded by someone yesterday that most of the first week is always “install” for the coming season. That means getting players - all players, not just the first-line units - to understand key aspects of the offense and defense, and doing the things in live action that the coaches have talked about and shown to the players on the proverbial chalkboard for months. Install is mostly a learning phase of training camp. But it’s also an opportunity for coaches to see which players can ingest (or have already ingested) the material and put it into practice. Texas RT Andre Cojoe to Miss 2025 Season A significant blow to the depth of the offensive line has hit the Texas Longhorns. Texas right tackle Andre Cojoe will miss the entirety of the 2025 season with a knee injury according to sources. Texas offensive coordinator and OL coach Kyle Flood stated Cojoe and Brandon Baker would be in competition this fall for the starting right tackle position. Texas received some unfortunate injury news over the weekend, as starting right tackle contender Andre Cojoe has been ruled out for the season. Cojoe had been in the best physical condition of his career and was competing closely with sophomore Brandon Baker for the starting job at right tackle. A little more on Andre Cojoe injury. I’m told that Andre Cojoe’s injury occurred during Saturday’s practice and that he was wearing a knee brace at the time. Sometimes players go without knee braces and it costs them dearly, but that was not the case with Cojoe. ** I have heard that Zina Umeozulu has picked up where he left off this spring before being sidelined by a broken hand. I know folks like to talk about true freshmen Justus Terry and Lance Jackson. But Umeozulu has been plenty good himself. He is truly challenging for playing time. View full news story
