Over in San Marcos last night, Texas State almost pulled off the biggest upset in school history. Arizona State held off the Bobcats for a 31-28 win. At one point, Texas State was up 21-7 in the second quarter, but only scored one TD the rest of the way. I mention that game because this weekend the Horns play Texas State's previous opponent, UTSA. I'm not much for the transitive properties of college football scores or stats, but Texas State beat UTSA 49-10 and amassed more than 500 yards of offense against the Roadrunners. Latest on Peach State 5-star OnTexasFootball spoke with a person in the circle of Grayson High (Loganville, Ga.) 5-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson Monday night. Atkinson, 6-foot-2 and 210-pounds, visited Clemson and Georgia in the last three days. Both will be in the recruitment until the very end. Last October just hours before Texas took the field against Mississippi State in Starkville, a report surfaced from former NFL reporter Diana Russini stating that UT head coach Steve Sarkisian made it known to his representation that he would be open to NFL opportunities in the offseason. With the announcement of defensive tackle Tia Savea heading to the portal, the Longhorns’ need at the position becomes even clearer. Texas loses no less than seven defensive tackles this off-season: Alfred Collins, Vernon Broughton, Jermayne Lole, Bill Norton, Jaray Bledsoe, Tia Savea, and Aaron Bryant. The Longhorns have looked dominant this season. The entire three-game stretch has been complete domination. Texas has outscored opponents 139-19. No team has even been within two scores of Texas during a single second half, not even defending national champ, Michigan. There is some commentary out there that Texas decided against a later start time against Ohio State. That has some truth to it. However, I’m told that it was not a later start time on Saturday that was actually proffered but an entirely different game day, asking the Longhorns to play on Sunday rather than Saturday. As we get ready for the game on Saturday, I have a couple of team notes. Trevor Goosby returned to almost full practice yesterday after taking last week off from any contact. Goosby had a medical procedure early last week and is progressing well. I’m told that if it’s left up to Goosby, he’s going to play Saturday. The 2024 season has concluded, which means the countdown for August begins now. Of course, the first day of classes for the spring semester began on Monday and the winter conditioning aspect will start up here in the next week. At some point the current teams needs a day off, right? Also, the 25 newcomers are all getting acclimated to their new campus, or for the freshmen, their first week of college classes. I gotta admit, it’s fun covering (and following) Texas recruiting. With Steve Sarkisian, there never seems to be a dull moment. Yesterday is case in point. Pensacola, Fla., five star defensive end Trenton Henderson surprisingly visited Texas. It was an unofficial visit. And now it looks like Texas will get one of his final official visits on June 20. Two transfers signed with Texas this winter yet never made it to spring ball: defensive tackle Travis Shaw and linebacker/edge Brad Spence. Both had lingering injuries from the previous season. Both had surgeries this off-season. Jeff published an OTF post-spring depth chart. I wanted to take a deeper look at how perceptions changed from prior to spring ball to today. We’ll start with the offense. Quarterback With Arch Manning sidelined most of spring, KJ Lacey was the lead engineer of the offense in scrimmage settings. Lacey proved a more than capable back-up. The real movement came down the depth chart. Texas had likely hoped that MJ Morris, the Coastal Carolina transfer, would do enough to be an unquestioned third stringer behind Manning and Lacey, allowing Dia Bell to redshirt no matter what. OTF has confirmed West Boca Raton (Fla.) DL Jamar Thompson will be in Austin for an official visit the June 19-21 weekend. Auburn, Miami, and Ohio State are the other schools in the mix. Michigan was previously a contender but got axed in favor of Texas. Thompson's OV schedule: Auburn (May 29-31) Miami (June 5-7) Ohio State (June 12-14) Texas (June 19-21) Kenny Baker and the Longhorns offered Thompson on June 15, 2025 but the OV will be Thompson's first time on campus.
