Checked in on the status for the Texas quarterback following the Tuesday morning practice session ahead of the ULM game. First and foremost, to reiterate what Steve Sarkisian and several sources have mentioned to me, this is not expected to be a long-term thing for Quinn Ewers. Speed has been the name of the game for the Texas offense this season. From Isaiah Bond to Jaydon Blue to Ryan Wingo to Matthew Golden and on and on and on, Texas is fast. There is a tremendous emphasis on recruiting for this game in Austin, Texas on Saturday. Of course, it certainly helps that the top-five matchup between Texas and the Georgia Bulldogs will be the undisputed game of the week and will have Gameday and all of the glitz and glam that goes with that. With the announcement of defensive tackle Tia Savea heading to the portal, the Longhorns’ need at the position becomes even clearer. Texas loses no less than seven defensive tackles this off-season: Alfred Collins, Vernon Broughton, Jermayne Lole, Bill Norton, Jaray Bledsoe, Tia Savea, and Aaron Bryant. Of course, the Horns signed three highly regarded defensive tackles in this recruiting class. Yet even that is clearly not enough. The Horns will need to add at least three defensive tackles from the portal this off-season to assure themselves of appropriate depth. Penn State persevered last night. Their D swarmed a Heisman candidate running back. The PSU offense was inconsistent but ripped off enough big plays in the run game and a couple of deep passes. The Texas Longhorns have secured their first defensive line portaler of the spring and their second of the offseason. Bill Norton, formerly of Arizona by way of Georgia, has committed to Texas following a weekend visit for the spring game. Norton entered the portal April 13 and immediately took interest in the Longhorns. Of course, it certainly helped the Longhorns' case that former Arizona defensive coordinator Johnny Nansen is now on campus in Austin, as he was key in helping Steve Sarkisian pull in both Tia Savea and now Norton. Portal iDL Jay Toia will be returning to UCLA following a portal entry this spring according to UCLA's official football account. Toia was on campus for the Texas spring game over the weekend with his family and younger brother, who received an offer from the Longhorns while on the trip. The Longhorns added an interior defensive lineman Monday afternoon with the announcement of Arizona DL Bill Norton. The very latest on Damonic Williams TCU defensive line transfer Damonic Williams wraps up his visit to Texas this morning. OnTexasFootball was informed by someone close to the recruitment that the visit went as well as could be expected. The Texas program, culture, need at the position, Kenny Baker's presentation, and Steve Sarkisian's program in general all checked the boxes. Williams is expected to continue the visit process with a decision likely mid-to-late next week.
