Landen Williams-Callis Announcement Live Thread The record-setting running back out of Richmond Randle High is set to announce his commitment at around 6:45pm CT tonight. Texas, Missouri, SMU, Texas A&M and Houston are the finalists. Texas has been considered the favorite for the last few weeks. Confidence remains in Austin headed into the weekend, but as always we must await the announcement from Williams-Callis. Today, Jan. 23, is the last day for the SEC and Big 10 commissioners to come to an agreement on the future of the college football playoff. The SEC wants an expansion to 16 teams. The Big 10 prefers an expansion to 24. Both parties must agree on any changes to the existing agreement. The SEC is said to be unwilling to go to 24. Without that guarantee, the Big 10 is likely to block a slightly expansionary move to 16 (or even 14). If there is an impasse, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey seems ok with keeping the current 12-teams format intact. ** But who really cares about the playoff format? Six games in, we have now reached the midway point in the season. And some Texas players who have not seen much action (playing in four games or less) are making and/or contemplating decisions about redshirting and then possibly transferring. Yesterday, we heard of one such player who is opting to take the redshirt with the intent of entering the portal in December. He will not play the rest of the season. While we are not going to name the player until he or the team announces it, I can say the player is not a front-line player and really does not have a clear path to the field or to be a large contributor long-term at Texas. As Steve Sarkisian has started his spring practice exit interviews, there has been some potential movement behind the scenes. Just so everyone is aware, we are hearing of a returning Longhorns defensive starter potentially hitting the portal. However, no decision has been finalized to our knowledge. And I want to make sure everyone understands I italicized the word “potentially” for a reason. We’ll see what happens in the next 24 hours and update accordingly. The deadline to enter the portal ends April 30.

Thoughts on the Portal So Far *** This is going to be a really interesting week for a number of reasons. Blake Gideon is set to return to Austin as the Longhorns safeties coach in 2026. Gideon was the Longhorns’ safeties coach in 2024 and helped orchestrate a top ten defense with a hand over the backend of the defense. Georgia Tech hired Gideon as their defensive coordinator for the 2025 season, though after one year, Gideon returns to Austin.
