Let’s talk about some of the defensive newcomers in the freshman class and what we’ve heard the last couple of days and end it with a couple of notes on offense: - If you’re asking who is the biggest surprise of all freshmen so far, look no further than California linebacker Rocky Cummings. Cummings not only has the physique of a big-time prospect but he has already clocked 21+mph while showing ample athleticism. For comparison, Cummings is clocking just as fast as Tyler Atkinson and Kosi Okpala. - Okpala has also been mentioned as one of the bright spots. Texas linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. is the first Longhorn off the board in the 2027 NFL Draft, headed to the Tennessee Titans with the 60th overall pick in the second round. Hill, a former five-star recruit from Denton (Texas) Ryan, has been projected in the second round for much of the draft process after a stellar career in Burnt Orange. Hill burst onto the scene as a true freshman on the road at Alabama, recording six tackles and two sacks. Hill went on to start 32 of 40 game at Texas, racking up 249 tackles, including 31.5 tackles for a loss, 17 sacks, eight forced fumbles, seven pass breakups, three interceptions and two fumbles recoveries. The Texas baseball team showed a little spine yesterday. In the rubber match between the Horns and Mississippi State, Texas went down 5-0 in the first inning. Lesser teams would have folded tent. But Texas stayed in it, and stormed back to score 9 in the bottom of the third, and eventually take the series two-games-to-one. Games like yesterday's can have a lasting positive effect on a team's psyche. IMO, remember this game. Updated percentages on last weekend official visitors The Texas staff is preparing for the June 12-14 official visit weekend, but at the same time working very diligently to close out and/or build a lead with top defensive targets from last weekends loaded official visitor weekend. - Johntay Cook had the first TD of the scrimmage. - Manny Muhammad had an INT of an Arch Manning pass. - No major injuries, at least not ones that were during the practice. Anybody that was injured during a play, eventually got up and walked off. - First group of receivers were Isaiah Bond, DeAndre Moore and Johntay Cook. The receiver group rotated heavily. - Quinn Ewers looked extremely sharp. However, receivers did not make many contested catches, even on well-thrown passes. The latest on 2025 DL JJ Hanne Spring and early June riser JJ Hanne (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Catholic) will make his first unofficial visit to Texas later this week. The 6-4, 275 pound defensive lineman will fly into Austin Thursday and visit Texas Friday per a person very close to the recruitment. The visit comes after defensive coordinator Peter Kwiatkowski made a visit to see Hanne in May, and PK and Kenny Baker offered June 4. Hanne will leave Austin and head to Eugene to visit Oregon, and is expected to make official visits in September. Texas pitched its second largest shutdown in the season opener in school history Saturday afternoon against Colorado State. My five biggest takeaways from the afternoon at DKR. *** 1. This truly has been one of my favorite game previews. Texas has played in several big games since I started covering the program, none have been against the defending National Champions. There also have been fewer programs that have seen as much turnover as Michigan on a year to year basis, especially after seeing how much success they had a year ago. The Longhorns have looked dominant this season. The entire three-game stretch has been complete domination. Texas has outscored opponents 139-19. No team has even been within two scores of Texas during a single second half, not even defending national champ, Michigan.
