I’m starting to do my overall breakdown of the 2026 recruiting class. I’ll be releasing three each morning and each afternoon until I’m finished. Here are the first three players. QB Dia Bell Known: athletic, accurate, intelligent, manuevers well in in the pocket, good size and requisite arm strength. Seems to have an unhurried feel for the rush. Extends a lot of plays while keeping eyes downfield. Looks to pass before run. Competitive. Strong performance bloodlines at an elite level. Dia Bell may be bigger, may have a stronger arm and may even be a better athlete, but KJ Lacey is clearly the most accurate of the two talented young QBs for the Horns. During Wednesday’s media viewing session, Lacey separated himself from the pack, routinely and almost effortlessly placing the ball on time and on target. Both basketball teams advanced to the Sweet 16 this weekend. It’s the first time in three seasons that both the men and women advanced to the round simultaneously. For the men, it’s the 15th time in program history the Horns have made it this far in the NCAA tourney. The men are clearly peaking at the right time. They’re turning the ball over considerably less than they did in the regular season and defensive metrics are significantly better as well. Plus, they’re routinely hitting clutch shots, be they from Tramon Mark, Jordan Pope, or as was the case Saturday, Camden Heide. In all three games the Horns have won, none of them have been “lucky”. The news of Cade Haug’s decommitment caught me by surprise yesterday, but hey, modern recruiting is modern recruiting. I actually liked that Texas took Haug’s commitment but I understand and respect the front office staff for staying put on their number. Yes, the current linebacker picture is bleak with Houston commit Jerrell Bridges being the only target the Longhorns seem to be in on at this juncture. Texas loaded with NBA talent in 2026-27 The preseason polls will have the 2026-27 Texas Longhorns basketball team ranked anywhere from No. 7 to No. 12. The team was very well constructed by Sean Miller and staff with pieces that fit, and a number of those pieces will have futures in pro basketball. That could be in the NBA or overseas in high level leagues in the next few years. With the Protect College Sports Act headed for the trash heap, it’s time to ponder what the future of college football will look like in the coming years. Will the SEC and Big 10 break away and create their own set of rules? I think that’s where this is headed. And I believe that’s where it should head absent federal law. But, I’ll take it a step further. I think logic dictates that it may also be time to look at a football-basketball only breakaway. On Texas Football has learned that Ohio State transfer DT Hero Kanu is on his way to Georgia today for an official visit. Kanu visited the Longhorns over the weekend, which was followed immediately by an official visit to Florida yesterday. We are told Kanu is expected to make a decision about his future on Wednesday or Thursday of this week. Texas A&M was also thought to be involved but it doesn’t appear the Aggies will receive an official visit. Kanu is 6-foot-5, 305 pounds. He would be the third transfer DT for the Horns this campaign. The one thing about the NFL combine is that numbers do not lie. They tell a truth. And the truth is Texas coaches recruit and develop real speed. A few quick notes: - As we reported yesterday afternoon, Ryan Wingo is sidelined with a hamstring injury for what likely will be the remainder of camp. It’s not considered ultra-serious. His timeline for recovery is about two weeks but the thought is Texas would rather let it fully heal than put undue pressure to return early. - Jordan Washington was dinged up over the weekend. I'm hearing that the visit of Stanford receiver Emmett Mosley V has gone really well. Texas has put themselves in a good position to land him. But another team is still hanging around, and that's USC. Emmett's younger brother Trey is committed to the Trojans, and Emmett attended high school at Santa Margarita Catholic in Southern California. The Trojans, however, have a much different set of circumstances at receiver than the Longhorns. USC returns three of their top four receivers from a year ago. The Texas men’s track and field squad limped (literally) to a 34th place finish last night. One of the hurdlers who was expected to score points for the Horns was injured. That puts a greater emphasis on today’s action at the women’s T&F championships where the Director’s Cup will also be decided. According to Director’s Cup expert Dr. Brett Wilkinson, the Texas women must finish 11th or better to secure the Director’s Cup for Texas for the fourth time in five years. Texas lost out on Ezavier Crowell last night; the Alabama native decided to stay home and play for the Crimson Tide. But life goes on. The drought is over! Texas is back on the board with the commitment of 2026 Mayde Creek LB Kosi Okpala Thursday morning. Okpala chose the Longhorns over Penn State, Baylor, Houston and Miami (Fl.). Texas adds its first linebacker of the class with the addition of Okpala. The 6–2, 230-pound backer saw plenty of time off the edge with 29 tackles for loss over the last two seasons.
