We're on the cusp of spring practice beginning and NFL pro day. Both events are tomorrow. One thing we always look for in the spring are any jersey number changes. Well, we have the first one. The team's new No. 1, at least on offense, is Ryan Wingo. The sophomore from St. Louis is switching from number 5. Texas hosted approximately 100 high school underclassmen at their Elite Camp yesterday. About 20 of them walked away with a scholarship offer. We’ve compiled a complete list that we’ll be publishing in an hour or so for those interested. Some folks have asked multiple times about Mark Stoops and when he might be joining the Texas staff. In speaking with someone close to Stoops over the weekend, we are told the plan is for Stoops to join the staff officially sometime directly following the spring game. On Sunday, KJ Green, a highly rated edge prospect from the state of Georgia, released a group of top schools. Texas was not among them, even though he previously had scheduled an official visit to Austin. Why? The Horns pulled themselves out of the race. The Texas baseball team showed a little spine yesterday. In the rubber match between the Horns and Mississippi State, Texas went down 5-0 in the first inning. Lesser teams would have folded tent. But Texas stayed in it, and stormed back to score 9 in the bottom of the third, and eventually take the series two-games-to-one. There are so many new faces on this team (players and coaches alike), so many subplots via position battles and position changes, so many different things to consider. The Overall Talent I have not spoken to a single “outsider” who has attended a practice who has not come away saying that this is the most physically gifted Texas team they have seen in recent memory. Oklahoma State defensive end Wendell Gregory was thought to be narrowing in on a decision late Sunday. However, a new week means a new vision for his future, according to an agent source. It was quite the day for the Longhorns, as they landed two players out of the portal who will immediately make the team better. We first saw Texas get a commitment from Stanford’s Temo Becerra. While he can essentially play any infield position, he should start at shortstop. It’s worth noting that the staff feels he’s better defensively than UVA’s Eric Becker. Offensively Becerra is solid.
