Texas at Duke (75-60) thoughts: Morning after If one is doom and gloom or looking for a bunch of negativity, this isn't the post for you. Want to get that out of the way. I'm more excited about the potential of this season after the Duke game, than before. Texas has a legit coach, very good concepts in the half court on offense, a team with enough size to compete in the SEC and some players on the perimeter that will look different against future opponents. I'm arrow up on this team after last night. That doesn't mean I'm predicting 24-7/23-8 or 22-9. The first CFP rankings were released last night and Texas, coming in at no. 11, got a little more respect than some figured they would. The Longhorns were ranked above both Oklahoma and Vanderbilt, two teams they’ve beaten. That should seem obvious yet the Horns are ranked behind OU in the AP poll. Also of note, Texas is the second-highest rated two-loss team, behind only Notre Dame who sits at no. 10. ** The SEC clearly has the attention of the CFP. Ouchita Parish (La.) DL Dylan Berymon tweeted late Tuesday evening he would be re-opening his recruitment. Berymon had been flirting with other SEC programs with Ole Miss being the biggest contender. Berymon committed to the Longhorns on June 7th after his official visit in the summer. Now, Texas moves forward with 20 commits in the 2026 class, with Corey Wells, Vodney Cleveland and James Johnson as members of the defensive line haul. *** UPDATE 10:40 pm: Berymon tells OTF he is still “100% committed to Texas” and remains in the class. Not that excuses are worth much, but Steve Sarkisian revealed yesterday that not only was Texas without Michael Taaffe and Jelani McDonald on Saturday, but Manny Muhammad was also sidelined for a while during the game. That means the Horns were without three starters against Vandy at times. Again, it’s no excuse for a fourth quarter meltdown. But context is important. Texas is currently on a four-game win streak. That's tied with Georgia for the third longest current win-streak in the league behind only A&M and Alabama. During that streak, we've seen a team that is maturing, especially on offense. And we've seen a team that is consistently showing a spine when times get tough. Texas vs. Duke: Injury notes ahead of Tuesday's season opener The Texas Longhorns played preseason scrimmages against SMU and TCU without big men Matas Vokietaitas and Lassina Traore. Vokietaitas has been nursing an ankle sprain suffered early in fall practice. In the case of Traore, he has been working back to full strength following missing last season with an ACL injury. OTF can now report that not only did the 6-foot-6, 305-pounder make it to Austin for the game, but he will remain in Austin and on campus through Sunday afternoon. Just a week after suffering a concussion in overtime against Mississippi State, the redshirt sophomore quarterback was removed entirely from the SEC injury report last night.
