4-star LSU commit Texas visit update Four-star offensive tackle Brysten Martinez (Gonzales, La./East Ascension) made a 36 hour unofficial visit to Texas over the weekend. In speaking with a source, OnTexasFootball can report that the initial takeaways were that Texas WILL have a shot in the recruitment. What exactly that means, we will hear more about in the next 24 hours. The 6-foot-6, 305-pounder, and a number of LSU commits, are in a tough spot with the early signing period December 3-5. Some more notes I’ve picked up over the weekend: 1. Just nine practices in, and Bo Mascoe is already considered a lynchpin of the secondary. He’s been that good and that consistent. He is currently CB No. 1 with the clear versatility to play NB if Will Muschamp and Blake Gideon opt for that route. 2. I was told Derrek Cooper is the one freshman who everybody knows will play in 2026. There will be other freshmen join him for sure. But he’s the one where it is already extremely evident. 3. Texas holds its second scrimmage of spring ball tomorrow. The Horns are through 11 practices now and still have not endured what I would term a “long term” injury to a starter or even an immediate backup. Kaliq Lockett is the only such player and he’s expected back by June. We need that to continue. Monday AM Recruiting Notes There were some key additions to the Texas Longhorns June official visitor list over the weekend, including a pair of 5-stars. North Crowley offensive tackle John Turntine III and Mater Dei (Calif.) tight end Mark Bowman both locked in their June OV dates to Texas. Both are at the top of the board at their respective positions. Either they are or they aren’t. Texas is either good enough as a team to go into Starkville today and beat Mississippi State or they aren’t. Yes, Texas has been less than stellar this year. The offense is a clear work in progress that seems to have regressed more recently. Whether that’s on the O-line, the QB, or the play-caller, it’s irrelevant. The defense and special teams have largely carried the team to a 5-2 record. Furthermore, Mississippi State is no longer the worst team in the conference, even though they’ve lost 15 consecutive conference contests. We’ve talked about how Texas coaches have been on the road recruiting for the last couple of weeks and the importance of that. Well, the Horns offered Caleb Siler, a 6-foot-8 offensive tackle from Gunter, as a result of those school visits. You don’t just magically hoist Director’s Cups at the end of the year. Chris Del Conte and his staff work for it. Del Conte and Texas hosts its annual coach’s retreat this week. Almost all Texas head coaches will head about an hour and a half outside of Austin to meet with administrative staff for a strategy session for next school year. Del Conte does this once year. Swain picked Texas over Ohio State after making official visits to both schools in the last few days. Swain's best game of the season came in his final game in an Xavier uniform. Texas hosted two portal prospects on campus yesterday. Max Klare, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound tight end from Purdue, made the trip with his parents. He caught 51 pass for 685 yards and four TDs a season ago. It’s unclear at this time what other schools he is considering. Punter Jack Bouwmeester, who was second team All-Big 12 at Utah this season, was also on campus. Bouwmeester averaged 44.9 yards per boot this season and has two years of eligibility remaining. Bouwmeester, an Australian native, spoke to former Texas punter Michael Dickson via phone yesterday, according to CJ Vogel. Arizona interior defensive lineman Bill Norton has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal according to a report from 247Sports' Matt Zenitz. Norton, who played under new Texas LB coach Johnny Nansen a year ago, started his career at Georgia and will be on the move again for his college career in 2024. The 6-foot-6, 325-pound defensive lineman split his snaps between the A-gap (170) and B-gap (179) in 2023 according to PFF. He wound up recording 32 tackles, two forced fumbles and three pass deflections. As Texas pursues options on the defensive line, Norton will be one to keep an eye on.
