Texas received good news yesterday when Ethan Mendoza made the decision to return to school. Longhorns assistant coach Troy Tulowitzki met with Mendoza and his family yesterday at their home in Bedford and the two parties agreed it would be best for him to finish his final year of college baseball in Austin. Unfortunately for Mendoza, he will require shoulder surgery, which is set to take place this week. As far as a timetable for a return goes, that is currently up in the air. I wrote yesterday morning that there is no magical offensive guard in the portal who is slated to become a starter for Texas. That if such a person enters, it’ll have to come from the rosters of either Miami or Indiana. Yet about an hour later, we learned that Georgia OL Jamal Merriweather was on campus. Many folks assumed this was a big deal. It wasn’t. Merriweather, in his third year at Georgia, saw the 13th most snaps of all Georgia OLs in 2025. As it stands now, the Texas roster continues to appear in a number of way too early top 25 rankings. But the work is far from done with two guard spots remaining. The catch, and what we at OTF had been skeptical of was his eligibility. Seymore had a redshirt season in 2021, appearing in just two games for the Miami Hurricanes. The portal isn’t very fun right now, right? Until the imports start rolling in, that’s largely the mood across the Longhorn fanbase. As of this writing, Texas is up to 19 portal entrants and will likely hit 20 soon. That number itself isn’t surprising. I reported in mid-December that 20 would be the expected mark. Rumors are swirling that five-star combo guard Aaliyah Chavez (Lubbock Monterey) will take in the Texas WBB game later today at 1:00 PM. I can confirm, however, that this is NOT true. Chavez made the five-hour trek to Norman over the weekend to squeeze in one last visit to Oklahoma and I've been told that it went very well for the Sooners. Again, they're selling her on their offense and the fact that it's a great fit for her. Chavez will make her decision tomorrow afternoon at Monterey High School.
