We’re twenty-two days from Texas starting fall camp. That also happens to be the same number of players Texas signed in the NCAA transfer portal this year. It’s a record high for Steve Sarkisian during his tenure at Texas. While some of that increase is a direct result of the NCAA increasing its scholarship total from 85 to 105, it still creates an entirely new composition of the Longhorns football team. Texas is “older” as a result of the portal additions. In fact, Texas added nearly as many portal signees in this class(22) as the Longhorns did in the previous two combined(23). According to a source, the court is granting the TRO and setting an Injunction hearing. So, Hutson has prevailed in the first part of the process. Hoops report: Early returns The Texas Longhorns 2024-25 team has reported to Austin, and is in the gym daily. OTF picked up some early thoughts and returns around the program in the last 24 hours. Jayson Kent has been mentioned early on as an impressive pick up. Both physically (from a strength of frame stand point) and really knowing how to play the game. The "knowing how to play the game" is a theme around the program. Texas feels like Tre Johnson and the portal additions are going to be a better "know how to play" team this year. Both find ways to make plays on the football and the havoc levels are throughout the roof when it comes to creating pressure and forcing takeaways. The fickle nature of the portal was on full display in Norman, Oklahoma, over the weekend. Late Friday, one of the Sooners’ more promising young players, defensive lineman David Stone, officially entered the transfer portal. The former five star showed up in Norman just a year ago with lots of expectations and a hefty NIL price tag. To leave so soon would be a slap in the face to Sooner nation. The issue? The focus was on making the offensive and defensive fronts focus on being physical. At 10am this morning, Mayde Creek linebacker Kosi Okpala is expected to break the recent recruiting dry streak for the Horns. Okpala has also been considering Penn State, Baylor, Miami and Houston, as well as the Longhorns. He’s an athletic, play-making linebacker who, when you watch him on tape, moves so well that his actual size surprises you. At 6-2.5, 227 pounds, he has the strength and bulk to play inside but the athleticism to play outside and rush the passer. Will Texas add to the 2026 recruiting class? The Texas Longhorns signed a Top 10 class in early December with 23 signees. At the time, there weren't any visible signs or conversations behind the scene that Steve Sarkisian and staff would add anyone else to class. I know the first inning looked bad for the Horns last night. Giving up four runs on just two hits is clearly no recipe for success in Omaha. But the performance by the Georgia pitcher in the 7-1 win for the Bulldogs was the real story of the night IMO. Fifteen strikeouts, allowing only four hits while tossing a complete game.
