Recruiting in 2025 is acting like recruiting in 2025. Twists and turns result in wins and losses in the blink of an eye in the current world of recruiting. Texas has certainly experienced its own emotional rollercoaster over the last week. With one final weekend of official visitors loading up, the staff has a loaded group of prospects coming in and can continue to chip away at another top five class. A few thoughts for me that are top of mind currently. *** Where Does the Staff Go at Running Back? The decision of KJ Edwards to commit to Texas A&M was unexpected. Usually teams are either mentally checked out for bowl games or really honed in. You can easily get a sense of that in how they practice. But I went to practice yesterday for the brief media viewing window, and I just couldn't tell much, especially not the overall vibe or energy of the team. The viewing window was just too short. So that means any prediction of mine for this game is going to be a shot in the dark at some level. I think the Michigan defense is better and deeper than most Longhorns fans realize. Edwin Joseph, a 6-0, 190-pound safety from Florida State, is making a visit to Texas today. Joseph recorded 37 tackles and three interceptions as a starting safety. Georgia, Texas A&M and Mississippi State are also involved. Joseph will be going into his redshirt junior season in 2026. BOOM! Four-star cornerback Montre Jackson has committed to Texas. The Garland Lakeview Centennial standout chose the Longhorns over SMU on Saturday afternoon. Jackson has long considered Texas his leader since earning an offer in early January. He made it official this weekend by joining the class. "Just the environment," Jackson told OTF earlier this year of the Longhorns leading his recruitment. "The times I've been here, everybody just treats me like I'm family." Earlier this week, Texas announced it would be bringing three players to SEC media days next week. The three (Arch Manning, Trevor Goosby and Colin Simmons) come as no surprise. This off-season, we’ve focused a lot on the players who have joined the team via the portal or high school recruiting. And perhaps not enough on those returning. Texas is back on the board! The Longhorns earned a commitment from 2025 Hightower DB Kade Phillips Saturday evening. Phillips has long been a priority for the Texas staff since being offered in February. Phillips officially visited Texas during the June 21–23 weekend and the reports OTF received were very positive for the Longhorns. Texas is back up to 13 commits in the class with Phillips becoming the first safety in the fold. Phillips also joins Caleb Chester in the 2025 class for the secondary. On the surface, Meredith has the prototypical size, frame, length, physicality and ball skills of an elite corner. He checks every single box without leaving any for question. Big news out of Duncanville. Five-star WR Dakorien Moore has decommitted from LSU and re-opened his recruitment. Moore had been committed to LSU since August 12, 2023, however there had always been plenty of whispers behind the scenes that Texas was not all too worried about the verbal pledge. Now that Moore is back on the table, you can expect a continued all-out press for the nation's No. 1 WR. According to a "clarification" penned by the Judge Charlotte Sweeney, who granted the class of 2022 a five-for-five years opportunity, the injunction she wrote on Friday does not alter "the House Settlement, roster caps, and transfer rules". So what does that mean? Yes, class of 2022 players will be granted an additional year of eligibility if they seek one. However, they will not be able to transfer to another school to play this season unless they had already entered their name in the NCAA transfer portal in January. Wellington (Fla.) Palm Beach Central DL Tyler Alexander has committed to Texas, he announced on Tuesday morning. Alexander chose the Longhorns over Georgia, Notre Dame, and Colorado. OTF began the day with a stop in Greensboro, Ga. to see Florida State commit and Texas target Kevin Wynn at Greene County High.
