Some recruiting notes from yesterday and a bit of an overview that missed much of it while at the game: - Grayson, Ga., DL Joseph Mbatchou became the 24th commitment of the class of 2025. Of Cameroon descent but a longtime Atlanta resident, Mbatchou is playing his first year of high school football yet became one of the hottest recruiting commodities late this year. - Oak Park (Ill.) Fenwick DL Nathaniel Marshall made a surprise official visit to Austin over the weekend. Marshall has been committed to Auburn. He becomes the latest DL the Tigers and Longhorns are fighting over. Yesterday marked the best single game performance of any Longhorn for the entire 2025-2026 school year. Adrian Rodriguez, a sophomore from Flower Mound, hit for the cycle in a 14-2 win over Alabama in Omaha. Rodriguez finished the game 5-5 with seven RBIs and 12 total bases. Yesterday the news broke that Texas Baseball Associate Head Coach Nolan Cain would be leaving for Texas A&M, where he is expected to take the same role. So why did it happen? One reason, it appears, is that his family wants to be in a “small town” environment. Apparently the hustle and bustle of Austin was a negative for his family. Obviously there was an existing relationship between Cain and Aggies HC Mike Earley as well, which played into this. Lubbock Monterey combo guard Aaliyah Chavez is fresh off winning a state championship, but now her decision date is nearing. The nation's No. 1 player will decide between Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, South Carolina and UCLA on March 25th. Over the past couple of months it's been Texas and Texas Tech at the top, with both schools looking like they had the best shot to win out. If you don’t have the stomach for it, you shouldn’t follow recruiting. Texas lost one of its top running back targets yesterday to Texas A&M in Carthage’s KJ Edwards. Edward’s was long considered a Texas lean until other factors came into play. The Aggies are pushing the limits on NIL this year in recruiting with apparent little regard to the House Settlement. Have they found a loophole or work-around? Or are they confident the rules of engagement will change yet again by the time December’s signing period rolls around (not a bad bet IMO)? TCU transfer defensive tackle Damonic Williams wrapped up a visit to LSU last night, and leaves this morning. He arrived Monday evening, had dinner with defensive line coach Bo Davis and two other coaches, and spent the entire day Tuesday on campus - including a meeting with Brian Kelly. Now it's decision time for the 6-1.5, 315 pound difference maker, which is expected Thursday. 2025 TE Nick Townsend chooses the Longhorns! A big win for the Texas staff out of the Houston area as Townsend commits to Texas over USC, Alabama and Texas A&M. Townsend becomes the 15th commit in the 2025 class and joins Emaree Winston at the tight end position. The Dekaney product visited Texas June 21-23 for his official visit and the staff did a tremendous job at pitching the role and production of Ja’Tavion Sanders during his historic tenure as a Longhorn. After speaking with multiple folks who attended yesterday's scrimmage, there are two themes that have emerged: 1. The Quarterbacks. Texas has not one, not two, but three QBs who have serious NFL potential, with the ability and know-how to move the team down the field. Texas is back on the board! The Longhorns earned a commitment from 2025 Hightower DB Kade Phillips Saturday evening. Phillips has long been a priority for the Texas staff since being offered in February. Phillips officially visited Texas during the June 21–23 weekend and the reports OTF received were very positive for the Longhorns. Texas is back up to 13 commits in the class with Phillips becoming the first safety in the fold. Phillips also joins Caleb Chester in the 2025 class for the secondary. Decision Day: 4-star LB Jonathan Cunningham Fort Worth (Texas) North Crowley linebacker and OnTexasFootball 4-star Jonathan Cunningham is set to announce his college commitment around 7 p.m. central. Cunningham, 6-2 and 195 pounds, will announce out of a final three of Texas, TCU and Utah. Momentum continues! Texas adds five more stars to its 2025 recruiting class with the huge addition of WR Jaime Ffrench out of Mandarin, Florida. The Longhorns come away victoriously and hold onto what had been a solid lead dating back to the summer official visit period. Ffrench left Austin following his OV and immediately sources told OTF that the Longhorns were going to be the team to beat in this recruitment and sure enough, Sarkisian and Chris Jackson pull it off for another OOS five-star. Even amid a national election, yesterday was a fairly normal Tuesday for us at On Texas Football. Until the early afternoon. Things changed in a blink of an eye for our Blake Munroe and his wife Krista. The staff at On Texas Football received a quick text from Blake. Their oldest son, Colt, was at football practice. He went over the middle to catch a pass. He was tackled, a normal tackle. But Colt writhed in pain and was taken to the nearest ER. Blake was with him. But the story didn’t end there. Ten Things I learned from this Season *** Feel free to add some thoughts you had from this season as well. *** 10. Youth is an Excuse, But Not a Good One This was one of the biggest points that consistently popped up as the season progressed. And it was emphasized clearly by something I will expand on later with road games. Steve Sarkisian has mentioned several times just how young Texas was on the field this season. While true, it should not be an excuse. A couple of players who have announced for the portal to know: CB Bo Mascoe - Rutgers DL Ian Geffrard - Arkansas Before becoming an Honorable Mention All-Big 10 selection in 2025, Mascoe played for and was recruited to Rutgers by current Texas cornerbacks coach Mark Orphey. He totaled more than 50 tackles and made one interception this season. He’s originally from Kissimmee, Fla. Texas two-sport athlete Jonah Williams will undergo surgery to repair an injured shoulder that he sustained diving for a foul ball recently, his father confirms to OnTexasFootball. Orangebloods' Anwar Richardson was first to report the news. The University confirmed the news, via press release on Monday afternoon. Williams is expected to be ready for the 2026 football season. Yesterday was so embarrassing for Texas Tech, I’m not sure where to even start. They literally went to court to argue for a player on their team to maintain eligibility after he knowingly gambled on his own team (while suited up for the same team). All in the name of winning. So I have to ask all of you this question: What’s the worst thing you’ve witnessed of a program or team losing all morality in the name of winning?
