During Coffee & Football yesterday morning, Gerry and I discussed that signing three of the uncommitted defensive players who were on campus for official visits this past weekend would be categorized as a “good” result given that so many of the players were elite. Well, I’m told Texas feels exceptionally good about their standing with a number of those players. Texas is shooting for a higher hit rate than Gerry and I discussed, possibly five or more. Three key changes to June 20-22 OV list The final official visit weekend in June for the Longhorns is now the biggest, by far. Texas has made additions to the visit list with 5-star LB Tyler Atkinson and locking in 4-star++ DL James Johnson after that one has been going back and forth with Syracuse fighting for a visit. And then there have been cancellations with 4-star+ RB K.J. Edwards committing to Texas A&M, 4-star+ OT Grayson McKeogh headed to Notre Dame and 4-star++ DL Valdin Sone visiting Georgia. As of late last night, there still was no word on the decision of Indianapolis WR Monshun Sales, one of the nation’s top 10 players. I am told that Texas remains in contention. Sales is set to announce his decision later today on the Pat McAfee show and is expected to choose between Texas and Indiana. Cedar Hill defensive lineman Jalen Brewster, one of the state's top prospects, visited Texas a couple of weekends ago despite being committed to Texas Tech at the time. He also visited Florida and LSU. It's expected that Brewster will eventually de-commit from Texas Tech sometime this summer, with LSU being the new front-runner for his services. Texas will continue to monitor and keep in touch with Brewster because they like him that much. But LSU appears to be the winner at this time. Florida is thought to be out of the race entirely.

Trevor Goosby’s hand injury has been the talk of the last week. Will the newly minted starting left tackle actually be able to start against Ohio State? After a couple of days off, the prognosis has been day-to-day. Things seem to be moving in the right direction though. As of now, he should be able to go against the Buckeyes. But that “should” also factors in continued healing at the current pace and no setbacks in the interim. Goosby js a key piece to this offense. A pair of big boy recruitments are set to finalize soon. Indianapolis WR Monshun Sales, a top 10 player in the country, is slated to choose between Texas and Indiana on Friday afternoon. The Longhorns remain in the mix. Neither team has been told yes or no as of yesterday and communication lines remain open. The Longhorns are hopeful but I think it's important to stop short of saying optimistic. The Horns are well aware of the high stakes here and how recruitments like these can come down to the wire. SEC Tournament: Texas vs. Texas A&M Game Thread Texas takes on little brother in the second round of the SEC Tournament this afternoon after Wednesday's win over Vanderbilt. The Longhorns are on the outside looking in of the NCAA Tournament field of 68, but would move into the tournament with a Quad 1 win over the top 15 ranked Aggies. Earlier this morning, I posted that at least one starter is likely headed to the transfer portal. As of this hour, that remains the same. However, I can add that one of the starters who was also thinking about entering the portal has decided to remain at Texas. I didn’t name names this morning for this very reason. Another one! The Longhorns stay red hot out of the portal with the addition of former Syracuse DL Maraad Watson! The fifth (!) defensive lineman addition since the conclusion of the 2024 season is perhaps the most talented. Watson was a Freshman All-American last season for the Orange, where he recorded 493 snaps. Watson spent more of his time as a 3-tech for Syracuse, weighed in at 315 pounds and figures to be a guy that will rotate in with Alex January on the Texas defensive line this upcoming fall. Just a quick update here. Colin Simmons, Ryan Wingo, Anthony Hill and Arch Manning have all been expected to return to Texas, and they indeed will. But we're now starting to hear about others who are definitively returning next season. While we won't report on everyone in that regard because the Horns are expected to retain the vast majority of players, we will mention a few here and there we think are important. The top-line guys (Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo, and Emmett Mosley) all stayed after practice to work on red zone routes with the quarterbacks. * The starter who was in the green jersey on Monday was no longer wearing one on Tuesday. * Texas OL coach Kyle Flood continues to seek the best fit for the left guard spot. We’ve been tracking a returning starter entering the portal as of early this week. As of now, we believe there’s a greater than 50-50 chance that that player now remains at Texas. It’s coming down to the wire but that’s where it sits as of right now based on sources close to the player in question. ** While much of the focus has been on returning starters and “name” players for the Horns, the effort for Texas staff goes much deeper than that. Following three weekends of official visits, the scenarios for the class headed into the season are pretty clear. Could Steve Sarkisian go back to Georgia Tech for his running back coach position? That was a possibility that was passed along to me on Sunday. Norval McKenzie is a name to know in the Longhorns' RB Coach search. McKenzie is currently the running backs coach and run-game coordinator at Georgia Tech. He had previous stops at Vanderbilt (2021-2022), Louisville (2019-2020) and spent three seasons prior at Arkansas State (2016-2018) as the running backs coach and special teams coordinator.
