Texas Hoops Update: Latest on injuries The Texas Longhorns (9-2) will be back on the court Thursday facing a New Orleans (2-7) team that won't provide a test. Texas is once again expected to play without star freshman shooting guard Tre Johnson (21.1 ppg), who has a minor hip injury. Johnson is expected back on the court after the Christmas break. Senior forward Jayson Kent will return to the Longhorns this season. After suffering a wrist injury, there was some thought he may take a medical redshirt if he missed enough of the season. That will not happen, as he is expected back on the court sooner than initially expected. There is the possibility Kent cou…

Texas hoops will be ranked top 10 in 2026-27: But what does it really mean? The Texas Longhorns will be ranked anywhere from No. 7 to 12 in the preseason polls prior to the 2026-27 season. With that ranking comes heightened expectations, especially coming off the Sweet 16 run in year one under Sean Miller. But the question is what does the lofty preseason ranking next year actually mean for the Longhorns? The answer is Texas has the opportunity to have a tremendous season. And with that everything is on the table whether it’s back to the second weekend, an Elite 8 appearance, Final Four appearance or the magic carpet ride to playing for it all. And the f…

Texas Hoops: Battle for Wilcher; team notes Sean Miller and staff are in a battle for St. John's transfer combo guard Simeon Wilcher. Texas has been the favorite to land the 6-foot-4 CG that started 25 games for the Big East Champion since entering the portal. Maryland and Ole Miss are among the teams battling hard vs. the Longhorns. Maryland, in particular, due to the family relationship with Buzz Williams have been a thorn in the last 16 hours. Chris Beard is also trying his best to get Wilcher to not commit to the Longhorns. More on the remaining needs for the 2025-26 team below. Two team notes ... Two players have looked really good in recent work…

Texas hoops: Horns roster, transfer possibilities and recruits to know The NCAA transfer portal is officially open with April 22 the closing date. Sean Miller has yet to be introduced at Texas, but that doesn't mean there won't be plenty of initial decisions made on the Texas roster, potential Xavier players that could follow and high school recruiting. OTF takes a look at the possibilities, with the understanding that players in the portal is WAY too early to begin speculating on. Texas roster and Sean Miller ... Chendall Weaver, G, junior Weaver missed the vast majority of SEC regular season play, playing only ten minutes or more in the opener at T…

The staff considers that very much a quality win that will continue to look better as the season moves along. Jayson Kent's injury status ... Texas Hoops: NCAA Tournament berth in clear sight after win at Missouri The Texas Longhorns enter the week with an NCAA Tournament berth in clear sight after winning at Missouri Saturday night. With the win, Texas climbs to 7-5 in SEC play with the target number at 9 conference wins to make the Field of 68, and very likely avoid the play in game. Texas will be favored in two of the last six games for sure, including Tuesday night in Austin vs. LSU. This is truly a one game at a time scenario for the Longhorns. You can undo plenty of work the last month if you get upset Tuesday night. Should Texas win against LSU, then 9-9 looks like a very strong bet needi…

Texas Hoops: NCAA Tournament seeding possibilities Hello March 1! It's almost time for March Madness. The feeling inside the program following the Saturday win at Texas A&M was that of feeling extremely confident the Longhorns will be in the NCAA Tournament. That won't be said publicly at this point, to be clear. But the reason is Texas now has seven Quad 1 wins with the road win against the Aggies, and still has one more Quad 1 opportunity coming up Wednesday. Of course, winning 10 SEC games is still the No. 1 goal right now. That would take away any chance that Texas would be in the First Four in Dayton. Remaining schedule ... *- projected NCAA…

Texas Hoops: One more big; international prospects in play Sean Miller and staff have three more spots to fill on the 2025-26 roster. As it stands now, the Texas roster has already appeared in some way too early top 25 rankings. But the work is far from done. Texas will add one more big, and the Horns lead big for 6-10 rebounder and defender Lassina Traore. Miller will also add one more combo guard to the squad, with the requirements being ball handler and perimeter threat with enough size (likely 6-3/6-4). More on that below. Miller has addressed the needed height and length in the program. The current Texas roster now features five players that stand 6…

And the Texas Longhorns staff is set to host nearly ten visitors over a ten day period. OTF begins Thursday with a look at the names to know for Texas fans. Chris Youngblood, guard, South Florida The 6-4 guard originally from Tuscaloosa (Ala.) has Texas' full attention. The best player on the Bulls team in 2023-24 averaged 15.3 points, shot over 40% from three and is a tough player that is considered one of the best leaders in the portal. Texas Hoops: Practice begins Thursday; Duke game 42 days away Sean Miller's first season at Texas begins in 42 days in Charlotte vs. the Duke Blue Devils. Prior to that first game as head coach at Texas, the Longhorns will conduct 30 practices in 42 days per NCAA rules. The Longhorns in year one under Miller are considered a top 25 team by some, and fringe top 25-30 team by others. They are a team projected to make the NCAA Tournament. Making the NCAA Tournament in year one under a new coach is not a given. Todd Golden didn't make the tournament in year one at Florida, Danny Hurley the same at UConn, Rick Barnes the same at Tennessee, Bruce Pearl the sa…

Texas Hoops: Scrimmage report after 80-52 win over TCU The Texas Longhorns took on TCU in a closed door scrimmage Saturday in San Antonio. Texas won the scrimmage 80-52 against a TCU team that isn't considered quite as strong as the last 2-3 teams in Fort Worth. With that being said, OTF was told that Texas played very well in a lot of aspects. OTF notes from the Texas-TCU scrimmage Five players in double figures. Tre Johnson and Tramon Mark led Texas with 13 points apiece. Tre Johnson scored 13, and that included going 0-4 from three. Which won't happen very often. Johnson is expected to be a 38-40% three-point shooter this season. Texas shot the b…

Texas hoops: Scrimmage vs. SMU Sean Miller's first season at Texas begins in 20 days in Charlotte, N.C. vs. the Duke Blue Devils. This weekend, Miller and staff will get a good feel for where they are at with the SMU Mustangs headed to Austin for a closed door scrimmage. Per dumb NCAA rules, the scrimmage results are not made public (wink, wink). The Longhorns in year one under Miller are considered a fringe top 25 team by some, and top 35-40 team by others. They are projected to make the NCAA Tournament. The preseason AP Poll was released on Monday. The Longhorns were in others receiving votes, technically No. 29. There were six SEC teams ranked a…

Texas Hoops: Sean Miller interview with Jon Rothstein Sean Miller sat down for a 30-minute interview with College basketball reporter Jon Rothstein earlier this week. This is a thorough interview, and gets into what Miller and staff are thinking about this roster construction, current state of college hoops, the move to Texas, the SEC and more. Completing the 2025-26 roster ... Texas has two scholarship spots remaining. One spot is a lock to be used. Doubtful Texas will use the 13th spot at the present. That spot will be one more guard addition. That guard could be an international prospect or a high school prospect, depending on how some international possib…

Texas Hoops: Sean Miller on the road seeing targets; roster update Sean Miller and staff are on the road again this week. Miller is leaving zero doubt with the Goosby family of where Austin Goosby sits on the Longhorns board in 2026. Miller and Ulric Malagi will be back at Melissa High this morning to see the 6-5.5 guard and top 35 ranked prospect in the cycle. Goosby is a Texas lean over BYU, Kansas and SMU with Alabama and Duke likely to jump on board during the May "live period". Miller is also expected to make a couple more stops in the DFW area today, possibly 2027 PF Dawson Battie (Dallas/St. Mark's). Battie is likely to be one of the first 2027 offers in…

Texas Hoops: Sean Miller putting together the tallest roster ever at Texas Sean Miller and staff added 7-foot-1 international center Lewis Obiorah Saturday, adding to what is now very likely the tallest roster in Texas basketball history. The Longhorns have added six new players to the roster with two more spots available to be filled. The six players added are 7-foot-1, 7-foot, 6-foot-10, 6-foot-8, 6-foot-7 and a 6-foot-4 combo guard. The additions, along with keeping 6-foot-8.5 forward signee John Clark in the fold and retaining 6-foot-9 Nic Codie, 6-foot-6 guard Tramon Mark and 6-foot-3 guard Chendall Weaver has created the tallest/longest roster I have seen …

Texas Hoops: Simeon Wilcher commits! Vinson to portal; two spots remain Sean Miller and staff have added a much needed combo guard with size in St. John’s transfer Simeon Wilcher. The 6-foot-4 guard fills two needs: a combo guard with size, and has two years to play. The staff was targeting a likely multi-year guard with Truman mark, Chendall Weaver and Jordan People entering their last season collegiately. Miller immediately addressed the needed height and length in the program in short order. The current Texas roster now features six players that stand 6-foot-8 or more. The four portal transfers thus far stand 7-foot, 6-foot-10, 6-foot-8 and a very athletic 6…

Texas Hoops: Size everywhere, more portal additions to come For years Texas fans have clamored for a roster with true bigs and size across the board. Well, Sean Miller is already proving he is your guy in that regard. The three portal additions so far are a 6-foot-8 wing/F that will be an NBA draft pick when he leaves Texas, a 7-foot center that will very likely be an NBA prospect after two years in Austin and a very athletic 6-foot-7 wing/F that shoots it from three at 39%. And there will be two more portal additions to the roster, with one being another big man. The current Texas roster now features five players that stand 6-foot-8 or more, with another…

Texas vs. New Orleans The Texas Longhorns play host to New Orleans tonight with just two games remaining until SEC play begins with a trip to College Station January 4. Texas (9-2) is coming off a 121-57 win over a woeful Arkansas-Pine Bluff December 15. New Orleans arrives in Austin 2-7, with high-major losses to Kansas State (89-65), Baylor (91-60) and Iowa (104-57). The Longhorns will play a second straight game without star freshman guard Tre Johnson. Johnson is likely to return December 29 for the game vs. Northwestern State. Senior forward Jayson Kent, may play tonight. He's missed seven straight games with a wrist injury. If Texas holds him out toni…
