Tech people sure are leaning into the Mental Disorders. From one chatter "For the Safe Habor determination with mental health diagnosing Gambling Disorder is listed as a Substance Related and Addictive Disorder in the diagnostic textbook since 2013, meaning it is considered an addictive disorder (and therefore a mental health disorder). It would seem that the Safe Harbor exemption would be a clear cut argument if we are providing ways for student athletes to seek mental health treatment for addiction concerns without punishment, as the American Psychiatric Association conceptualizes it as such."

Oh interesting, I wouldn’t know the first thing about the court system, so I didn’t realize it would be in federal court and not state court. Is that also how it works when players ask for another year of eligibility? Does that go through federal court too, or state court?

Oh, I fully agree with you. But like Bobby somewhat pointed out a few weeks ago about the lawyer taking the case — the guy is a killer in the courtroom. He’s not going to take a case unless he sees a path to win. And when he was betting on his own team in 2022, he wasn’t even legally allowed to gamble. I know the courts are supposed to be unbiased, but come on — a judge in Lubbock will be overseeing the injunction. I could definitely see it swinging Sorsby’s way. But at the same time, this sure seems like it should be a fairly open-and-shut case based on the precedents already set in previous rulings, like the Iowa State players’ betting scandal.

I hope I’m wrong, but I think Sorsby will end up winning this in court and play the entire season for Tech.

@Gerry Hamilton Do you ever have players reach out to you with comments or input, positively or negatively, after you’ve made/posted a video about them? Just curious how active those conversations are behind the scenes. Obviously I’m sure it differs from player to player.

Random question on this situation—if it plays out where the NCAA rules Sorsby ineligible, you’d assume he and Tech would challenge it… unless he’s worried more details could come out and hurt his draft stock even further. Where would he even file for an injunction? I know players fighting for an extra year usually file in the state they play in—would he have to file where the NCAA is headquartered instead?

I get where you’re coming from, but this feels like putting the blame in the wrong place and honestly, it seems a bit dramatic. Podcasts like On Texas Football aren’t the ones causing gambling problems—people making irresponsible decisions are. Sports betting exists whether a podcast takes ads or not, and acting like removing sponsorships is going to protect “thousands of families” is a stretch. Also, there’s a big difference between promotion and personal responsibility. We don’t expect broadcasters to stop airing alcohol ads because some people abuse drinking, and the same logic applies here. A quick disclaimer is fine, but asking platforms to completely cut off a legal revenue stream just because it can be misused doesn’t really hold up. And honestly, if anything, transparency is better than pretending it doesn’t exist. Fans are already exposed to betting everywhere—from TV broadcasts to social media—so singling out one podcast to “just say no” feels more symbolic than effective.

My guess is they strategically scheduled Texas last to keep as many media members around. Last year, the final day consisted of Sam Pittman, Mark Stoops, Eli Drinkwitz, and Mike Elko. While Drinkwitz might bring some entertaining responses, there wasn’t much incentive for others to stick around for the fourth day beyond those teams’ media members.

Completely agree with you. The only reason I could rationalize is if he wanted to stay closer to family. I don’t know his family situation, but maybe he has relatives who would have a hard time getting to his games. Visiting three different campuses in one week, all far from his hometown, might put things into perspective and make staying closer to home feel like the best option. Like you said, he’s going to make money anywhere. I know I might be reaching a bit, but with Alabama’s QB situation, that’s honestly the only reason I can think of for choosing Alabama. Also, it’s still Alabama—they’re going to put a good team on the field regardless of their quarterback situation.

Convinced several schools ran a group project where they told their stars, “Have your agent reach out to Texas to see if they would have an interest in signing you.” Then Texas, doesn’t re-sign anyone, thinking upgrades are coming. Then—surprise!—everyone stays home and Texas is left refreshing Twitter and message boards.

It’s definitely changed since I was there—they actually have football now. I was only a freshman for the 2001 championship and was long gone before the three-peat basketball championships in ’08, ’09, and ’10. It’s pretty cool that you’ve heard of Ponder before, not very many have.haha
