60 years ago today
I had been to SA that weekend to visit my GF and was driving back hime for my 10 am class in the English Bldg. I had to be at work at noon, and I had an important errand after class which would have taken me on to the Main Mall, down to the Co-Op, and back to go to my car. I do not know the timing of all this with Whitman’s opening fire, but I definitely would have been in harm’s way if I tarried long at the Co-Op. instead, I decided to cut my class and to run the errand later, and I went home to get ready for work. My Dad called and said: “I am glad you are home. There is a guy on the Tower shooting people.” “Oh, sure,” says I, and he said “Turn on the radio.” I was glued to a radio the rest of the day. TV was not a factor then.

3 would could have beens at Texas
What if McCoy runs the option correctly instead of tip-toeing down the line. No way a backside LB should have touched him let alone hit him hard. Poor play call, perhaps, but abysmal execution. The injury was the result and should not have happened.

Beautiful Day at the Ballpark
I played at Clark Field. There was no ramp in CF. There were footholds cut in the 15-foot cliff, and our OFers practicing scaling it by going at it straight on and climbing up at full speed using the footholds. Full speed momentum was required or it was roadrunner falling backwards.

Baseball Game Thread: No. 2 Texas vs. No. 5 Auburn (Friday)
Oh heck, man, I know better than you none of the minor things I have done means anything to anyone. What it taught me, though, is a jocksniffer’s saying a UT coach does not care is world-class idiocy.

Choosing not to try? WTF are you talking about? Have you ever played or coached? I have done both, and that comment is reprehensible.

Top 5 Longhorn Resume by position
This post received some reaction so I will explain my mission. I was Roosevelt’s HS baseball coach in Brenham (LF on a state championship team), and he and I moved to Austin at the same time. We are close friends, but friendship is not why I have a mission. I believe Leaks is worthy of a statue or at least some recognition equal to a number (46) placed somewhere if not retired. Roosevelt was UT’s first Black All-American football player, and if he had not been foolishly required to do a full contact goal line drill the spring before his senior year, he almost certainly would have been UT’s first Heisman Trophy winner. He finished 3rd in the voting his junior year. He was a great college running back (fullback in the wishbone), and he persevered through racism from some of his teammates during his early time at UT. If there had not been a Leaks at Texas, there likely would not have been a Campbell. I wrote CDC twice about what I believe is a lack of sufficient and proper recognition, and I received no response whatsoever either time. Disappointing to a guy on a mission.
