OTF on the Road: Steve Sarkisian's keynote address at the THSCA Convention

SAN ANTONIO — The final day of the Texas High School Coaches Association’s annual convention and coaching school is marked by the keynote address, delivered by a college head coach.

This year, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian will speak to the high school coaches gathered inside San Antonio’s Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center on Tuesday.

On Texas Football is onsite to hear Sarkisian’s remarks with 39 standing between the Longhorns and the 2025 season opener against reigning national champion Ohio State.

    I hope Sark’s message got across in my running thread of his speech. It can be tough to convey emotion when you’re trying to capture every moment, but this was a great talk that provided a lot of insight on the culture Sark has fostered at Texas.

    A lot of Sark's message reminds me of an updated version of former UCLA basketball Caoch John Wooden, and his pyramid of success.  Coach Wooden was a great communicator, who was able to get his meesage through to his (admitedly great) players.  It is not surprising to me that Coach Sark is having similar success, which I think is still in it's early stages.

    I think Sark’s secret sauce is his vulnerability. He doesn’t run from his past, but it doesn’t define him either.

    There are few things in life as fulling as watching someone you love battle addiction, overcome it and grow from by becoming the best version of themselves.

    To that end, the version of Sark that Washington and USC hoped they’d get appears to be the one Texas has right now.

    I wanted to add a few of the slides that Sark put up on screens in the ballroom during his address.

    He's talked about some of these things in various interviews over the last couple of years, but today was a one-stop shop for everything you could want to know about the culture at Texas was built and it's being maintained.

    Yes it did. You did a good job of conveying what I take as Sark's keys to team building/culture.
