Well Texas has a safety coach, a nickel coach and a corner coach maybe they could hire a "unit" coach to have them actually cover somebody in the secondary

He's in charge of the secondary not the playcaller. He builds the secondary to fit the overall scheme that Akina didn't come up with. He also had a rag tag unit of backup's playing at the end.

Akina has always been terrible at zone. He’s in charge of the back half calls and pairing with front 7. It will be best to replace the old man that is not good at coaching the type of secondary PK prefers. 

If you want too be a predominant zone defense then yes makes sense. The question is the younger DB's are more man corners. It looks like their recruiting for man coverage
