CFP should never expand to 16 teams

Featured Replies

I don’t think that provides any room for any teams to have byes. No bye = zero incentive for conference championships. The incentive for conference championships is already a point of debate with the 12 team CFP.

I like the idea of having 14 teams with Top 2 getting byes or, at max, 15 teams with the top team getting the only bye.

Conference championships are just made for TV games. Having byes in CFB playoff is silly currently because of teams like Miami, BYU, Boise, etc getting byes over far better teams. The road to 16 teams will create far better playoff.

The ideal scenario for 16 teams would be the following which would also allow CCG to still maintain significance. This scenario is also implementing the BIG/SEC push for 4 auto bids.

ACC, BIG, Big 12, & SEC CCG participants get auto bid(8 spots)
BIG and SEC next two highest ranked teams get auto bid(4 sports)
Highest Ranked g6 conference champions(1 Spot)
3 At Large bids or 2 At Large bids + Notre Dame(3 Spots)
No byes
Top 8 Seeds/CCG Winners Host

An Example for this would be the following(using CFP playoffs latest rankings:

Your host would be: Oregon, Ohio St, Texas, Penn St, Indiana, Notre Dame, Alabama, and Miami

Obviously the seedings would be a little different by the end of year and they could have a huge show of bracket release.

Still don’t like it. I think 14 teams with top 2 getting byes is better than this.

They’re going to do 16 because Sankey and Petiti are going to force it since it is good for SEC and Big 10

The only way I like byes is if there are only two conferences(BIG/SEC) and the winner of each of those conferences get the byes. But with there being 4 power 4 conferences and a highest ranked g6 conference champion you have to include because anti-trust byes make no sense for NCAAF.

When the CFP become 16 games (2026) there won’t be conference championship games

Depends on what the networks want tbh.

Coaches would be against CCG

Do coaches want massive TV contracts that mean higher revenue sharing cash flow?

Coaches would probably be more concerned with injuries and rest late in the season. A 16 team CFP would produce a lot of revenue for for sharing.

Like I said, what coaches want won't matter because networks pay the bills. If they tell the conference the difference in a 1 billion dollar or a 1.25 billion dollar TV deal is the CCG, 100% they're going to take that 1.25 billion deal with the CCG tied to it.

Agree to disagree.

Mike Leach is rolling over in his grave.

It should expand to 64 teams like the NCAA tournament. Leach was right (as always).

If it was a 14 team playoff with 2 byes, this is literally the way it would work 99.999% of the time. Right now, the top 4 conference champions get the bye. The top 2 conference champions will almost always, if not always, be the Big10 and SEC champs. So if there were 2 byes, they would almost invariably go to Big10 and SEC champs.

This is exactly my point, and why I think we should never go to 16 teams. The sport is better with conference championship games. It is part of the CFB tradition, pageantry and connection to history. These things are a large part of what make college football great. The CFP is a necessary, corporate evil.

We are gradually throwing pieces of what make CFB great in the trash. We are introducing some new exciting things, like championship hopes lasting longer into the season. However, there should be a line in the sand for us to retain the classics while improving on them.

A 16 team playoff would only have two more playoff games than a 14 team playoff. If you got rid of conference championship games with the 16 team format, we would effectively have two less games overall compared to a 14 team playoff + CCGs (+2 playoff games, -4 CCGs). And that’s just counting the P4 CCGs
