Could Michael Terry be the surprise of Fall Camp?

Featured Replies

It would be a surprise. Terry just moved from WR in the Spring and is currently listed as the 4th RB on the depth chart (or 5 if you count the Niblett boutique position). That said, Terry is getting a lot of mention for a 4th string back from Sark and on the SID photo releases.  Terry might not be a challenge to the top three backs, but he could be carving out his own role.

Terry was mentioned as catching several passes in the second team Pony Package (20 personnel).  He is perfect for that role.  At 230 pounds, he can block for the smaller backs and in pass protection.  He can run inside as a counter when paired with Coleman/Brown.  As a former WR, Terry has an advantage when matched against LBs in the pass game.

Terry could also be the answer in short yardage and red zone situational football.  He is 230 pounds.  Cooper is the next biggest at 210 pounds and he is also unproven.  Sark seems to go out of his way to mention that Terry had some “nice runs” every chance he gets.  If Terry can burst into the scene like Niblett did last year, that would create huge problems for opposing defenses.

Jett Walker is being ignored as is James Simon.  Along with Cooper, these are the run blocking and blitz blocking backs.

Walker likely tops out this year as a special teamer.  He fumbled on air in practice one, is listed a 6th string and is getting no mention from Sark.  Simon is a good back, but he is a bit of a tweener.  He is not as fast as Brown/Smothers/Cooper and not as big as Cooper/Terry.  He just doesn’t have a niche barring catastrophic injuries at RB.

Some of y’all gotta let this love for MTIII go.

Agree let the kid focus on 1 position and let him learn

Glad Sark doesn’t have that attitude

Unless injuries happen, it's hard to imagine him having a big role this year considering Raleek Brown, Hollywood Smothers, and Derrek Cooper can do a lot of the same things he can do if not better. I think next season will be the first opportunity for him to have a big role with Brown gone and Smothers likely gone as well imo. And by big role I mean finishing in the top 2-3 RBs on the team when it comes to touches and snap count

Did Cody Johnson have a big role for Mack?

I get what you're saying but I like Derrek Cooper more for that short yardage role. Not trying to take anything away from MT3 and hoping he finds success in Austin, but the constant reporting of him needing to be a more physical runner is for a reason.

Honestly, I thought when he first signed he would eventually transfer.

I think people expect him to be a star. I don’t think he will be that. He could be a nice player, but if he could be one of the top players in the SEC. I think he would have seen some touches.

Someone is going to have to stay in for pass protection when the LG gets smoked. That's a role that MT could potentially take if he's got the willingness.

That's the spirit
