The Longhorns landed their third portal prospect this offseason, this time from Kent State outfielder Sawyer Solitaria. 

After visiting Tennessee on Thursday, the former MAC Freshman of the Year took in a visit to Texas on Friday, right before the NCAA dead period began. He chose the Horns over Georgia, Tennessee and Texas A&M.

This past season Solitaria went .294 at the plate, driving in 47 RBIs and hit 16 home runs. 

Solitaria is considered a top 100 draft prospect for the 2027 MLB Draft and is expected to contribute immediately. 

 

I am well pleased.

I thought the program was cancelled when Noah decided college station is cooler than the shining city in the hill country.

Wait, Cain left. We needed to defund the program.  He was taking all recruits and portal targets with him.

@Blake Munroe How's his speed? He's listed as a OF/UTIL, can he play 1B? At 6'5" he looks like a an ideal candidate for 1B.

Solitaria torched Tennessee in Knoxville earlier this season, racking up 5 hits (5-for-10), 4 runs, and leading Kent State to a series victory.  He went 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs, 2 runs scored, and a 439 feet HR, vs LSU.  In four total games against SEC pitching (LSU and Tennessee), Solitaria batted a .467 (7-for-15) with 1 home run, 2 doubles, 4 RBIs, and 6 runs scored.

The sample size against SEC pitching is small but shows he has a chance to be successful.

I think he hit over .300 his freshman year so last year could’ve been some growing pains trying to tap into his power. It seems like the staff is confident he’s going to square up the baseball better next year.

He should benefit from having guys in the lineup who can actually protect him.
