The University of Texas will have a new baseball coach heading into the SEC for the 2025 season. Head coach David Pierce will not return following eight seasons in charge. Pierce accumulated a record of 297–162 while leading the Longhorns, including three trips to Omaha for the College World Series and regular season Big 12 titles in 2018, 2021 and 2023. In 2024, Texas finished a rollercoaster of a season with a 34–26 record, falling short as the three seed in the College Station regional after squandering a game late against Texas A&M and coming out very flat against Louisiana with the season on the line. The No. 1 ranked Longhorns are gearing up to host a No. 7 ranked Auburn squad for another highly anticipated SEC series. The Tigers come into tonight's matchup red hot, as they have won fived games in a row, with four of those being ranked opponents (then ranked No. 20 Georgia Tech last Tuesday, followed by a sweep of a Top 10 LSU squad over the weekend.) Yesterday Texas Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle met with the media and dropped the news that second baseman Ethan Mendoza is considered day to day after sustaining a shoulder injury over the weekend versus Kentucky. The Longhorns are gearing up to host Oregon in the Austin Super Regional, with the first game starting tomorrow night at 7:00 PM (televised on ESPN). I checked in with numerous sources to get the latest on where things stand with Jim Schlossnagle’s club, along with the transfer portal, the Ducks and much more. While official pitching lineups have yet to be formalized (at time of writing), you can expect Texas ace Dylan Volantis to get the start on Saturday. After speaking with sources, Texas OF Will Gasparino will be entering the transfer portal. This is something that I’ve been monitoring for awhile. This was a mutual parting of ways. Obviously the Longhorns have been very active in the portal, already gaining commitments from multiple outfielders.

Texas landed a commitment from Penn pitcher Eli Trop. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound RHP has one year of eligibility remaining. Trop has a 3.07 career ERA, along with 82 strikeouts during those three years. This has been in the works for quite some time, but I’ve sat on it out of respect for Trop. He originally committed in the fall, as Ivy Leagues don’t allow a fifth year. So he entered his name into the portal in October.

The final day for the baseball portal window was Tuesday evening. Of course, this caps entries to the portal as players across the country look to find their new home. A few things here. Texas has added some important arms for the 2025 roster. They have done a fine job of using this portal window to bolster what was a pretty lackluster pitching staff in 2024. With Texas A&M hiring Michael Earley, the names that were anticipated to depart from the program and land elsewhere have mostly all returned. For the first time in 2026, Texas Baseball will take this field this afternoon at Disch Falk for the first practice of the season. The Longhorns have an absolutely loaded roster and expectations are high (including from myself). Perfect Game gave the Horns a No. 8 pre-season ranking. Personally, I think that's too low. D1Baseball has ranked Texas a No. 3 ranking, which I feel is just right. I'd say you can argue for them to be ranked anywhere in the Top 5. I've said it since the fall, but if this team stays healthy, they should be one of the best in the nation. First, and most importantly, I am told that Texas second baseman Ethan Mendoza is okay. He left yesterday’s game due to shoulder pain (the same shoulder that he hurt against Tennessee). Mendoza took part in batting practice this morning. — Speaking of Mendoza, just a week ago I thought he would for sure leave to the MLB Draft. He might still, but it’s not the slam dunk I once thought it was. Yesterday the news broke that Texas Baseball Associate Head Coach Nolan Cain would be leaving for Texas A&M, where he is expected to take the same role. So why did it happen? One reason, it appears, is that his family wants to be in a “small town” environment. Apparently the hustle and bustle of Austin was a negative for his family. It’s hard to believe that this season has come to an end. The Longhorns baseball season came to an abrupt end on Sunday afternoon following a 10-2 loss to Louisiana. Despite beating the Ragin Cajuns on Friday with relative ease, Texas turned into Jekyll and Hyde yet again and looked like a completely different team. Texas basketball adds developmental PG to the fold The Texas Longhorns added another player to the 2026-27 roster. Lithuanian 19-year old 6-foot-4 point guard Mantas Laurencikas committed to Sean Miller and staff Friday adding more depth and size to the backcourt. Laurencikas is seen as a developmental type prospect upon arrival in Austin in June.
