DESTIN, Fla. -- Earlier this morning, Tennessee coach Josh Heupel emerged from a working session with his eyes slightly glazed. Heupel and his SEC coaching peers had just spent more than three hours discussing the future of college football. Heupel said the possibility of roster reductions occupied the "majority" of the coaches' meeting. And the coaches are being asked to tackle all of the questions, including: How many scholarships should there be? What about walk-ons? Happy Monday. The 2024 College Football season inches closer Wednesday when the Longhorns return to the field for the first practice of fall camp. However, before we begin writing the story of the 2024 season, it is time for one last visit through the chapter of 2023 everyone would rather skip – the red zone. It was an issue for the Longhorns in 2023 and ironically, was a reason in which the season ended in the fashion that it did. Yesterday, these players were mentioned by coaches, in a unique way: Jaylon Guilbeau - Pete Kwiatkowski was asked point blank to name a possible surprise on his defense in 2024. The first name off his lips was Guilbeau, who is expected to challenge for playing time at the Star position. Gavin Holmes - PK eventually added Holmes to the list of possible surprises in 2024. PK mentioned that Holmes had had a good off-season and they felt like he was progressing in all the right ways. Starting With Arch There is something ironic and humorous that Arch’s first drive ended in an interception. The same way Quinn Ewers’ first drive as a starter ended in an interception. Both against ULM. There were good moments and there were bad moments. Fortunately, all of these learning moments came at a time where the game was never in question. Two visit updates; Georgia visitor list expands The Texas staff made a number of stops Friday in the states of Texas, Georgia and California. Texas Basketball Schedule The Texas Longhorns beat TCU 80-52 in a closed door scrimmage Saturday, and will take on Colorado October 26 in Austin in a second closed door scrimmage. I thought Arkansas would be a major trap game for Texas. But this Texas team proved me wrong. Or maybe Arkansas isn't all that good even though they beat Tennessee a month ago. Whatever the case, Texas continues to be a consistently good football team. And I think that consistency is what has separated Texas from every other SEC team this season (except for maybe Texas A&M). The Horns have been consistently good, particularly on defense. Texas and Georgia are set to kickoff in roughly 28 hours or so which means final details are being finalized and gameplans are being set. The last injury report released did not indicate any movement from the Texas health perspective. Kelvin Banks was still listed as questionable and Quinn Ewers was a notable omission. Still, that does not mean the Texas quarterback is at 100% health. – I am told Quinn Ewers is still a bit wobbly, but the expectation of course is he will start the game at quarterback for the Longhorns. The portal flood gates are open and the Longhorns are benefitting already. Texas is expected to land former Purdue DL Cole Brevard out of the portal after a trip to campus this week. Brevard is a 330-pound defensive lineman who started for Purdue for the past two seasons. Just a quick note on portal DL: 1. Peter Woods announced yesterday that he is returning to Clemson next season. Woods is someone Texas and everyone else in college football would have had interest in had he opted to enter the portal. 2. Nua Tanavasu of Utah and Toby Onyedim of Iowa State are two DLs of note to watch. 3. Portal prospects can not begin taking official visits again until Jan. 1. 4. There are discussions being had behind the scenes at this point. We’ll see where any of them go from here. But right now, there is nothing definitive that I have been made aware of.

The run on Longhorns headed to the portal has slowed precipitously. There’s been no real movement since the middle of last week. Which begs the next question. Will there be another run after the bowl game? Probably so. Behind the scenes, there have been multiple discussions from players contemplating their next steps.
